LONG ASS PSA; and my native language isn't englih, hahaha, what have I done-
[ Roleplaying as Donald was something I never expected in my whole roleplayer life.
This character is very simple , yet, too much complex to mindlessly answer people's threads going with "lol angry here, angry there, ANGRY DUCK".
Some people amy look down on me because of how I play their childhood hero, model, favorite baby.
I just wanted to say, Donald seem to be the type to look out for a fight everytime he meet someone. But, actualy, this isn't true.
Boy has something to follow, he has to complete the task his best friend gave him, he has friendship to protect and people's lives between his hands, like the King, Goofy, Sora and Riku [+kairi, lea and master dollar sid] .
People think Donald just go around beng mean on Sora for nothing and things. The duck is just the serious lever of the Trinity Trio. He cares about Goofy and about Sora (while in the begining of KH 1, he only took Sora for what he was: the Key boy; friendship soon replaced this, of course). If one of them would die, he would never forgive himself (like we saw how in KH2 Donald gave up to his rage and went to slay a thousant of ennemies when he thought his big palooka-sir-goofgoof was dead).
We began the KH serie with a character only focused on one task; "Following the King -his best friend- orders.". He went in Traverse Town with his other best friend, Goofy, to find the Key boy. Once finding him, they had to fight against a giant Heartless and Donald felt quite puzzled, because the said-Key boy was just a child. He always trusted the King, but meeting this spikyhaired boy all saddy about his friends and not seeming to care about the rest... He just thought the boy was an egoistic little brat and that he was only following him because of his royal best friend's orders.
Wonderland and the Collyseum happend, Donald witnessed how honest Sora was with himself. He was just a child, with a rare kindness, but still a child, with his head only filled with "competition" and "friendship". The duck slowly started find this Keyboy interesting, amused by how quick Goofy and him became friends. Soon, the Gummi Ship incident came, the spaceship crashed in Deep Jungle and separated the trio and Donald, -let's not forget, is an angry figure-, just went all mad. Of course, with Goofy, they soon reunited and forgave each others and things.
The adventures kept happening, Donald thinking of Sora as a friend more than the "needed" Keyboy. Of course he was childish, of course he had his flaws. But nobody was perfect and he knew it. The teenager had his qualities and his Keyblade. The magician was all starting to consider Sora as his best friend, he knew their adventures would reach its end, that they wouldn't be able to see each other again, this is why he tried his best not to grow too fond of hi friend. Then, Hollow Bastion came in his way.
Riku was the choosen one since the start. Sora was only a mere tool, betrayed by the friend he spent so much time looking for. The duck felt angry. Would did they followed Sora if he wans't the Keyblade Wielder ? Why things weren't right and why didn't they followed this -now- impossible to like jerky face ? Why did they followed someone as sweet and funny as the brunette boy, if things were only to spread them apart ? But, Donald considered staying with the Postman, but what could they do ? Againt a bunch of Heartlesse, against Maleficent ? Without the Keyblade, the Universe, them, Sora would soon dissapear.
Donald was angry. Angry against himself for liking Sora; angry against Sora -even if it wasn't his fault- for wielding this Keyblade which wasn't his and being so nice, so endearing, so naive. Donald followed Riku, he had to follow the King's orders, it wouldn't be hard to forget the brunette, it would hurt less to never see Riku after they'd save the Universe and things. But then, Goofy was reluctant, clearly unable to give up on his other friend. Something Donald knew, but he wouldn't be able to be alone without any good friend. The royal knight finally followed him, and his sadness, his pain was heartbreaking. Donald was the meanie of the story, he didn't liked it, but at least, it would hurt less than watching his friend die because of a bad choice.
The Keyblade opening hearts. Pointed at Sora. And Sora not moving, only accepting his fate because it was his best friend's words. Goofy protected his friend. He went against the King and Donald's orders. Because he was much more honest with himself than how Donald was ? But, how could he face Sora after leaving him like an empty pen in a trashcan ? It was Goofy, once again, who changed this, invitating him with his mindless but powerful words. Maybe he just knew how his friend worked ?
The reunion, the Keyblade came back in Sora's hands. Because friendship and justice sense was what the Kingdom Key seeked in one indivdual ? One may never know. Riku ran away, they ran after him, they defeated Maleficent and then... They finally met him again. This time, Goofy was the only one not with them, separated by a magic shield.
Riku changed, he wasn't himself anymore. He wanted to hurt Sora. This time, the duck was ready to stop him ! Since this Riku wasn't really Sora's friend, brutally stopping him wasn't even a debatable choice. UNfortunately, he was simply tossed away, only able to watch them fight.
Sora won, but what was the price ? Only this damn Keyblade opening the heart. Kairi's light was trapped inside of the teenager's heart. He had to free it. No. It was impossible, he wouldn't dare to. He would die ! Sora, the brunette boy, everything about him would just fade away, he would leave Donald and Goofy, in the painfulest way !
Even after trying to stop him, Sora sacrificed himself, letting Kairi's heart return where it belonged. While Donald ran to try and repair what was done. But it was too late. He was only able to yell, to scream out of pain, to tell Sora to come back.
After this event, Riku, possesed by Ansem, tried to save them. Donald, noticing it, forgave the teenager, thinkign it wasn't his fault and sensing something depper about him. Knowing how much Sora cared or him, then...
The adventures kept happening, the Universe was saved from Ansem. Donald heard the awkward, yet, quite true words of wisdom of Sora. He knew now why the Keyblade chooses him again. Then, they met the King and Riku, trapped in the other Realm.
He -the King- thanked Goofy and Donald for what they did. He left them with Sora, without saying any orders. And they stayed with Sora.
The adventures continued and continued. We saw a Donald considering Sora like his best friend. We saw them two having arguments, laughing, mocking each others.
Yep.
Donald is the serious lever of the Trinity Trio, but he is also the 4th wall breaker, the humoristic little sassy "tsundere". Just remember in KH 2, he has a things for gold, his singng voice is horrible but he doesn't seem to know, when he saw the King, he jumped on him and hugged him.
DONALD HUGGED THE KING AND MICKEY WAS LIKE "oh gosh wtf calm ur peepee" and -gently- pushed him away.
So, yeah.
Perfectly roleplaying KH!Donald is hard.
I'm not saying I get him all the time, I try to.
Understanding him take time.
But if I roleplay him, it's just because it's a character that people tend to not really understand. It's a character I tended to hate when I was a child, but now, I understand how he is in KH and it's kinda blowing my mind.
