Emulsion and Oils on Dryboard.

Finally making a start on my dry board piece, and what I am hoping will be one of my resolved pieces if I am happy enough with them. I want the two sides to be different to one another so that I can get more of an idea of which design I prefer as right now I think only one side will be used within my resolved work, unless I later decide differently. I have gone in with a mix of emulsion and oil paints straight onto my white board using my board as my palette and my mixing area. I adjusted the colours a little once mixed by adding more emulsion or more oil paint to add a bit more depth to the piece. I didn't want the colours to be solidly one colour or I would have pre mixed them before applying. Again I used a large coarse brush in this area to add some texture into the paint, along with a slightly thinner brush of the same style. I varied the colours between the two sides and also different the shapes within the two sides. I wanted one to be much more covered than the other, again for a little bit of variation. I'm excited to progress with these two pieces as I can see myself being able to incorporate more gesture and movement into the work.

Emulsion, Oils and Acrylic on Cardboard.

This is another palette piece that I have just painted using a mixture of oil and emulsion for my palette. The colour here was actually only applied as a way for me to clean the excess paint off of my brushes. I like these pieces more minimal as I have decided from the few others that I have made so I decided to keep this piece with just one solid black path.

Another finished piece that I am really happy with. More than impressed with how these colour palettes within the paintings are working out as initially I really disliked them on their own. I can't decide just yet if I prefer the darker or lighter pink. The darker definitely stands out more, but is this what I need when I already have bold black paths running throughout the work. I'm moving onto my dryboard soon so I will experiment with this on there too. This is also the piece that has no oil underpainting that can be seen around the edges. Again I'm liking this shift, it shows a difference in one piece to another so I think that I will keep this as it is. I am going to line up all the works soon to see how they look together, this could help me with this decision. If so, I will do my under painting, then start again with a fresh layer of acrylic. This will also give me more texture to work with in my ground as unlike all of the others, this was a very smooth surface to work on.

Acrylic on Dryboard.

I have already posted my painted dry board previously, but just like my canvases I have decided to utilise both sides of the dry board. This side of the dry board was plain, a beige colour as you can see around the edges. I have painted the board with white emulsion and a thick coarse brush to allow for the brush strokes to be seen. As there is no work underneath, I don't have much detail coming through so I only applied one layer of emulsion as I wanted to brush strokes to be visible, along with the underneath colouring in areas that were more scraped back. I painted in a cross hatch style as I didn't want my brush stroke to be lined up in unison, I wanted the board to be pretty messy and slack.

Emulsion and Oils on Board and Cardboard.

Two new pieces that I have photographed whilst their first layers are drying. The coloured areas are inspired by my palette pieces and I have done them in the exact same way as I would do if these were in fact a palette. Adding all my paints onto the painting, and then mixing them together whilst already on their grounds. I have done this to add a sense of my palettes into my work. I think that the palettes are just as important as the work itself, so by doing this I have incorporated the two into one. I have also really enjoyed the outcomes of turning my palettes into work, but i'm not sure if I want these to be a part of my resolved work. I feel that they are not neat nor professional enough to be seen as my resolved work, which is why I am trying so hard to make my paintings into the palettes themselves.

Emulsion, Oils and Acrylic on Canvas.

A look at two of my complete pieces of work side by side. I think these two complement one another really well and I am really happy with the slight differences between the two, but the colour coordination and links still make it clear that they are from the same body of work. I'm going to look at putting these and some other pieces up on my garden fence again to get a look at how things are looking in one place together. It also makes my work feel more professional, seeing the work up makes me take the work more seriously.

Emulsion and Acrylic on Canvas.

Initially I thought that this piece was done, however once comparing the piece alongside some of my other works, I looked back and realised that the work was too bare. Too much white space was still visible. I felt like this was even more prominent here as this piece is only black and white with no filled in areas. So I went in further with more paths using acrylic paint, also creating one of my patsh using a coarse brush so that the brush strokes were left visible. This bit took some practice getting the right amount of acrylic to complete and entire brush stroke, however I went about it by doing some tests first on spare paper, I figured out that my best approach would be to water the acrylic down ever so slightly for the texture of the paint to be more of a liquid. This worked well and I am now happy that the piece is complete. I can't say that it is one of my favourites out of the works that I have done, but I am happy that I have a variation. I don't want all of my pieces to look the same as I am not trying to produce replicas of one another.

White emulsion on unprimed Board.

As I have been working on the same pieces of board and canvas during lockdown, I have now started to use both sides of the materials. The canvas is only prepared on one side but I am using a ground of emulsion to work on top of, the same goes for the boards too. The underside of this board is beige and wood which I really like. I considered working with oil to create a light wash of colour around the edges before using the white emulsion, but opted against this for the first piece. This way I can decide if the pop of colour is really needed, or whether this slight difference will add to the work once it is displayed as a sequence.
