One of my favorite moments is the skis. The illusion of movement. The words in Peeta's note. The necklace reveal. The fact that Prim washed it clean (major hint!). That it's this gift from Peeta that strips Katniss bare to the start of everything. So I definitely have a treat coming about these skis 🎿

Hummingbirds, hummingbirds, hummingbirds! Post all the hummingbirds. Art. Photos. Stickers. Decor. Jewelry. Snow gear. Whatever you find that makes you think of green, blue, purple hummingbirds share with us.

Do a hummingbird coloring page. Write Everlark in hummingird colors, paint it, chalk it. Even an Everlark quote. Let your imagination run wild.

Hot chocolate! Who else is so ready for cooler weather? I'm a huge hot chocolate fan. Do you have a favorite? I like regular old hot chocolate best but enjoy trying different ones. Post some cozy hot chocolate feels.

Dig through KDNFB #outside chance playlist. What was she listening to for these chapters? What songs do you think K + P were listening to at this time? They were twelve in this flashback, you can check the OC timeline to find the actual year if you want to take a stab.

Track down + post some photos of hand painted snowboards or a snowboard with art that is morbid, intimidating and beautiful

A Lack of Passion

I really wanted to make an edit for these chapters but for all the things I had in mind I can not find any pictures at all. If anyone has any pic suggestions or a request send them my way!

I am totally tempted to make cheese buns this weekend. Someone make and send to me? Haha. Alright, let's start talking about the chapters!

What I really love is the relationship between Haymitch and Katniss. I feel like it truly parallels canon, in a much more discernible way, where we see how hard Haymitch is on her and later on we see how deeply he loves her. He looks out for her on every level. Here's my favorite line of his in chapter one

“You’re here,” he says, tapping a finger on my forehead. I resist the urge to shove his hand away from me and wait for his point. Then he drops his hand to point right above my heart. “Not here. Do you even remember why you started skiing? Shooting?”

That last sentence really sparked my interest. I *wanted* to know why Katniss started skiing. How she wound up a biathlete.

I think my favorite parallel is summed up in this quote

"Someone who steals their hearts and earns their loyalty."

Isn't that exactly how she became the Mockingjay?

Something new I noticed this time around is this quote, in relation to Finnick's from MJ about it taking ten times as long to put yourself back together. Intentional?

"You just focus on being ten times better than anyone else in that field.”

Who has started reading A Lack of Passion + A Suprise Visitor? There is a link straight to Outside Chance in our bio. We also reblogged the chapter one post earlier. At the beginning of each week we will do that for each chapter. I remember when these first came out, I was desperate for more details. Looking back there were plenty of hints. Let's revisit the excitement ✈️

So many settings are introduced in these chapters. Let's fill this Tumblr with feels. Post photos of any location, the training center, Katniss's apartment, Colorado Springs, the lodge, the Grand Tetons, Jackson Hole. Be creative!

A surprise visitor

Hummingbird alert! Who else adores that nickname? Such a unique translation of symbolism from canon to an au. It really gives you a hint and reinforces just how fast a skier K is after hearing Prim's anecdote in the previous chapter. I can't remember if KDNFB's timeline tells us how old Katniss is in this memory. I'll check it out and reblog for anyone who wants to have a look.

In case we have first time readers I'll do my best not to giveaway certain things from future chapters. I'll be vague, I have plans re: the skis in the coming chapter. I think it's 4 which means I need to get started!

"I keep my back to the valley"

Is this because of what happened to her + P or because of memories with her father? Both?

"But if you are feeling lost, you have family who will be there for you."

Who else adores Eirik? The fact that she used to call him grandfather in his native language, is just whoa, major clue at how deep the trauma must've been to cause the seperation. KDNFB does a wonderful job of integrating these new characters and blending them with the canon, doesn't feel awkward at all to me. Every character has a distinct voice and their development is well thought out. I always hear Eirik's lines in his accent in my head which doesn't happen very often with other authors. I thoroughly enjoy that there is two distinct cultures and the way the two families integrate them.

"And the hummingbird trail has been groomed to perfection, I am told."

We all knew who made sure of that. Check out the comments on chapter two for a mini drabble of Eirik + a certain someone 😉
