To housing at the University of Alberta,
My name is Lisa Lin, 3rd year student at the University of Alberta. I am sending this email in regards to $142.50 outstanding fee on my Bear Tracks account. I was told a few days ago that a $200 fee was charged because of cleaning that had to be done at the end of May 2011 in my HUB apartment. The charge didn't appear on my Bear Tracks until about a month ago and I was never given a notice about this charge. I would therefore like to appeal this fee with this argument.
For my first 2-years of University I have lived in a 4-bedroom apartment in the HUB mall residence. Looking back, it probably wasn't the best decision on my part for my first year away from home. Especially since, the first thing I thought of when I stepped into my new place of residence to start off my university life was, this place needs to be cleaned. The drains in the sink were clogged, the bathroom was moldy, the garbage was overflowing and there was a thin layer of dust covering every surface. It wasn't exactly what I had imagined. That being said, I was hoping I would have better luck in my second year of university in terms of living arrangements, but no dice. The place was pretty much just as filthy but with the added bonus of a disgusting fridge that made all your food smell really bad. And so, like I did in my first year, I cleaned as much as I could and definitely left the place cleaner then when I arrived. I arrived into the apartment with furniture in the common living space and look everything that I had brought with me. I left nothing behind and also left my room cleaner then I had arrived as well as the common living area, especially the fridge.
I have always been thankful for the things I have in life and been a model tenant for those 2-years. I made the best out of a difficult situation, no thanks to my roommates who weren't exactly Mr. Clean. I paid the rent on time every month, didn't complain when the rent was raised nor when I saw an ant crawl here and there or when there were fire alarms going off twice a day. I know that HUB is a very old building and has caused a lot of problems but I feel I've done my part in keeping it as clean as I can. I have said this many times to my friends and I would like to say it again, the apartments in HUB should be completely evacuated and closed for a month or two one of these years for a complete clean and renovation. It might create a dent in someone's (probably students) wallet but it will really pay out in the long run.
I therefore ask to please take my case into consideration.
Thank you for your time,
Lisa Lin
