this is good: outvi possm saddle roll dealy-bob
a quick note i wanted to do on a thingy i picked up. notes cribbed from an email to a gearhead friend of mine.
background: i don’t like riding mountain bicycles while wearing a pack unless the ride is in excess of 3hrs+. i don’t like carrying tons of stuff in my pockets, either. i’ve been using a large timbuk2 saddle bag for a while, which was fine on my hardtail mountain bicycle, but with a full suspension mountain bicycle, new problems presented themselves:
under rough riding the saddle bag rubs the tire, which really sort of sucks momentum down to nothing
i can’t effectively use my dropper post, and this is something necessary in one’s life, to be accepted
so, i still like the idea of a very compact something or other under the saddle. i don’t use co2, never adopted it as an inflation method, but do have an old crank brothers pump that is TINY and isn’t made anymore, alas. none of the more compact saddle bags (i was looking for something to sit up higher and tighter under the saddle) were big enough to accommodate the pump, which is a little under 7″ long.
and then i found this: outvi possm
i installed it (see video below) and rode with it today. it’s so much better. it’s obviously a little less waterproof than my timbuk2 bag, and i’ll have to figure out something clever and foolproof to do with my car keys (i really prefer to clip these to a built-in lanyard, which the timbuk2 has), but so far so good. i’m using a little dual-rubber band girth-hitchy contraption in complimentary colorway to keep the pump handle from popping out of the assembly. it’s semi-janky, but it works.
a review that got me interested: outvi possm video review
the only thing i’d like to do is get hold of a tubolito tube to further reduce the size. there were a few shops in switzerland that purported to carry them, but i never found one on a recent trip to europe. i’ve since ordered a couple direct from germany (super helpful folks, should have some distributorship in the u.s. in 2018). this should provide more space for keys, a valve core tool, maybe even a 2oz. bottle of stan’s.
yay.
this has been a thing that is good.
