When he aged our od thw orphanage he went straight to the military due to his struggles in school so he was kinda left behind as technology advanced the most "modern" tech he uses is like cds in his car.

When out on walks he has a walkman cassette player to listen to his music, and he still uses a flipphone

Ivo is able to continue using this tech even way into the modern day because he is VERY autistic about how they work, having very often taken them apart and put them back together. He even has a few ships of Theseus going on with how many parts he's had to replace on some items

Worker's Rights

I’ve kinda touched on this before, but one of the reactions Emi would have to Jamil’s situation would definitely be “wow this place needs much better labor laws and worker’s rights”.

And it’d be like, Jamil leaves Kalim alone with Emi for a few moments, and when Jamil comes back he finds her talking with Kalim like “So, how much do you think a person should work in a day? Mhm, and how long work days do you think Jamil and the other servants have?”

“What about time off? How much of that do you think a person needs?”

“You’ve got a lot of younger siblings, right? Do you think any of them are old enough that they should be holding a full-time job with a lot of responsibility? Perhaps they should be allowed to focus on school and their education instead?”

“What about employment contracts? What do you think would be fair for both parties?” *hiding some sample contracts she drafted with Riddle behind her back*

There would probably be a few occasions of something like this during SDC already, especially the more Emi learns about Jamil’s situation. Though she would also try to hold herself back because it is not her business and she doesn’t know the whole situation in Scalding Sands in general. However, she also just does not like the fact that something like that is apparently normal and okay, and it’s hard for her to not to express that in some ways. (This post definitely would be pretty accurate to her feelings about it as well.)

Once her relationship with Jamil warms up though, and she becomes more personally invested in his wellbeing… It will keep on happening, and she’ll also end up reading up on the applicable laws and traditions, to have more hard evidence backing up her words.

Basically:

Kalim: yay Jamil's friend / girlfriend, nice to see you! 😊

Emi: yeah hi, how you doing, may I introduce you to this concept called worker's rights?

(cue Jamil having a crisis in the background)

Honestly, the more I think about it, the more the lawyer / NGO / whatever track seems likely for Emi after NRC, assuming it doesn’t look like there’ll be a change in the circumstances of Jamil (and the other servants) otherwise.

Girl sees a problem that needs fixing and while she’d be absolutely intimidated and probably feel kinda helpless (if Jamil can't figure this out, what hope does she have?), she would feel like she’d need to figure out something she could do – whether that’s smuggling Jamil out of the country (just kidnapping him and taking him away sure feels like a tempting if unlikely prospect sometimes), influencing Kalim, or something else.
