Overthinking, but...

In a lot of fics, when Phantom is weakened and he passes out, he turns back into Danny. This usually ends up being an identity reveal.

What if it was the other way around. Phantom is hurt and weakened. In an unconscious state why revert back to his living half that has to work to function. Breath now. Blood flowing now. Organs working now.

Staying in the mostly dead state could make sense too. Danny's now stuck as Phantom until his core recovered enough for him to put the energy into turning back into 'living' Danny. The first time his happens probably freaks him out thinking he's all the way dead.

His healing also seems to be faster as Phantom so he spends a little time stuck that way and then can change back to normal.
