disregarding the absurdity of an archaeologist digging up someone's skeletal remains from a mere 100 years ago for no reason...

i think i've taken enough osteo and anthro courses to say that, yes, there are different skeletal features that are used in estimating sex, but it is just that: estimation. sex is a spectrum as much as gender is a spectrum. it's not as conclusive as terfs might try and lead you to believe.

sexual dimorphism is not so significant among humans. there are both non-metric and metric assessments that osteologists, bioarchaeologists, or forensic anthropologists can make. there are slight differences in shape and size. still, there are biases and difficulties in sex estimation.

while the pelvis is indeed the best region to identify sexual dimorphism, there are different coding schemes which one can use to estimate said traits, but it's subjective to the observer, dependent upon their experience in studying the skeleton, and nothing is completely certain.

there is always overlap between biological sexes in this range of variation. there will always be a level of error involved, and sex is just one aspect in creating the biological profile for an individual in hopes of identification.

anthropologists also know the difference between sex and gender. biology isn't the be-all and end-all of identification...

if i can use my degree for anything, i'd like to speak a bit into the void about this. the public perception about anthropology seems so different to how these complex topics are discussed with nuance in the academic bubble of the discipline itself. so, take this info as you will

My papa died on Saturday. We were super close. I drove home with my sister yesterday and I’m back at work today (just scheduling clients for next week tbh, don’t feel like seeing anyone today). I’m making the 6 hour drive back to our hometown tomorrow night with her again for the funeral on Wednesday. I’ll probably stay there until the weekend. I’ll be alright, just sucks in the meantime.
