Two very exclusive pens by @caran_dache are protected now by a custom made leather cover. A bit tighter for the pencil a bit wider for the fountain pen. I recently are using the prickingwheel more often. What a great surprise arrived saturday via the postman. A follower of @becauseblog saved this treasure from the dustbin and decided It will be well cared and used in my hands. The postcard he attached says that the tools are from a cobbler/saddler who repaired shoes in WWII and afterwards in the neighbourhood. I really like the fact to know a bit of a background, since most tools I own, I just can makeup stories in my mind about who used them. I also like the fact that it is a complete essential leather repair kit, with beeswax, cobblers tar, needles, overstitch wheel, knife, pliers and awls. I especially like the way he stored the thread. A shipment by the most traditional leathertools maker Vergez Blanchard arrived yesterday. And it´s an honor and joy for me to work with them. I think there is a balance with picking the right time to upgrade your tools. Starting as a beginner with the best tools is a good choice since there is nobody to blame except you. But also there is the risk to misuse them or to buy the wrong ones for your works. Also there is another point I think is important that I think you have to earn the right to work with certain materials and tools. On the images here you see a "GRIFFE à MOLETTE" - Overstitch wheel. It is used since generations of leatherworkers to mark the distance between each stitch. I usually work between 5 - 9 SPI (stitches per inch (2,5 cm)). The SPI has to match the work you do, the thickness of the leather and the thread you are using. A good choice for belts eg. is 5 SPI while on a whatchstrap it will look ugly. Have a look at his tool how it is designed, the different wheels are neatly stored in a brass bowl at the top and the screw to mount them can easily opened by hand without any screwdriver.
