Promise Ring headcanons
She sleeps with it on every night. It started after they broke up. Sure, she should have given it back to him but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. She didn’t want anyone to know that she still wore it so night was the best option. She would lay in bed, pull it out and slip it on. Easy.
She wore it when she graduated high school. The blonde wanted to see if he would notice. He didn’t. But Rachel did. Thankfully she didn’t ask any questions.
When she moved to New Haven she packed it before anything else. She just wanted to make sure she had it. Other things could be replaced but not that. Her roommate asked her about it once and Quinn got angry. It was never brought up again.
She thought about giving it back to him once. It was after she kissed Puck in the choir room. Maybe it was time to move on and truly try with the other boy. But she remembered the way Sam looked and the way he screamed gross. Her heart told her to not give up hope. What’s meant to be works out perfectly.
She made sure to bring it back with her that summer she stayed in Lima. She was back after her sophomore year and she wanted it. It became a security thing. A symbol that once upon a time a boy loved her enough.
When she ran into Sam that summer she had it on. She was grabbing coffee at the Lima Bean when she literally turned and ran into him. Coffee poured down his shirt. They laughed, and when she went to help him clean it off he noticed the ring. His eyes searched hers and they made plans for later that night.
He never asked for it back. It was hers and he made sure she knew that. They became friends again and she left for school, knowing a new relationship was blooming between them. He came and visited often as did she. He asked her to be his when he took her to Kentucky for Christmas break.
She still sleeps in his ring though she knows an engagement one will soon replace it. But she has such an attachment to that little piece of gold that she wonders if she can let go of it. She decides to save it for their future son. Something as precious as that ring deserves to make another girl happy.
