Something I noticed about old overwatch, especially the cinematics, was that there was always a line to them, some lesson the character had been taught that shaped their personality today. As I try to model my OCs I always think about the writing of the universe they're from, but it's been a little harder in overwatch. My OC has been in the works for years now, and even as I've started posting about her, I find myself unhappy with the product so far. Rewatching the cinematics reminded me why. I had written her for modern overwatch. I had written her to be scary, to be powerful. What drew me to overwatch was never the cool, powerful, edgy characters. It was the soul of what was behind them. The old cinematics were 6-8 minutes and taught you something, made you feel something. I want to write for the old overwatch. For the overwatch that was more than just forking over scarps of story when players begging annoyed higher ups into meeting demands. Because at the end of the day, overwatch forgot why it's characters were strong. It wasn't some badass attitude, it wasn't crazy skills, it was them. The strength of knowing a better world was possible, in forgiving someone who wronged you, in ruling by gaining respect and not fear. 76 wasn't a hero because he beat up some gang members, he was a hero because he let those people get away to save a little girl. This shows the most with their female characters too. Junker queen isn't some idiot, she's a brilliant woman that made her own equipment and showed mercy in an arena where people dying was expected. Kiriko isn't snarky and mean, she is compassionate and looks out for the locals, protecting those who can't protect themselves. Dva is not some egirl gamer. Yes i know she is canonically a gamer but just look at her cinematic vs in game. The dva who nearly died (may have actually died briefly as we see a defibrillator in her cinematic) to save her city would not skip reading mission briefs.
My OCs have always been a reflection of what I love about a universe, but the way I wrote this last one, I think it was only a reflection of what overwatch has become. All this to say, I'll probably be reworking her to a point, and hopefully I'll make a character I'm proud of this time
