file : interesting objects (#1): ghost hunting devices !
[click me!]
the ovilus - the ovilus is a communication device invented in god knows when by bill chappel. the device used by professional and amateur/just-for-fun explorers and ghost hunters in paranormal investigations. the device works by detecting electromagnetic energy- which may appear in the form of, for example, voices that living ears can't detect- then assigning a number to it that corresponds with a word in the dictionary. spirits and other entities (ie: demons, poltergeists) use the ovilus to attempt conversations with the living people who are operating the device. some alternatives to the ovilus that operate similarly are the spirit box, the hexcom, and the polterscript.
the estes method - the estes method is a method of interworld communication used by some of the more daring explorers and ghost hunters. the method was created by karl pfeiffer during his investigation of the stanley hotel in estes park, colorado, and is now a widely popular method of communication that many people use. the method requires two or more people in order for the attempt(s) to work, and it involves one- sometimes two, as seen in some of sam and colby's videos- people putting on noise-cancelling headphones that are connected to a spirit box. the person(s) wearing the headphones are also blindfolded. the other member(s) of the group ask the spirits questions and attempt general conversations with the spirits in the room or area, and the spirits or entities may choose to or not to use the spirit box to speak into the headphones, sometimes in response to questions asked by the living side of the conversation, and the wearer(s) of the headphones and blindfold repeat every word they hear. the estes method is very effective, and many questions asked receive an answer, but sometimes the words they spirits say are random, and sometimes they're unsolicited tid bits of information corresponding to the spirit's death, their opinions, their goals, etc.
the séance method - the séance method is another common communication method used by explorers and paranormal investigators. this method is sort of similar to the estes method, but this one fortunately doesn't involve cutting off people's two most important senses. the seance method involves setting candles in a circle on a table or floor and lighting them, and it's not uncommon for people to put cups of water and relevant objects inside the circle and surround the circle of candles and/or sometimes the area directly around them with a line of salt as an attempt to keep potential poltergeists and malevolent spirits at bay of physical contact; most people don't want to be scratched and burned by demons posing as little girls with depressing death stories. the séance method has been used many times in historically famous attempts at conversation with spirits, demons, poltergeists, etc., and seems to have a lightly sporadic rate of failure versus success in comparison to the estes method, which almost always works, whether it's just the spirit box spewing shit or an actual spirit.

Ovilus:
Why the Ovilus is Bullshit in the Finale (Sincerely, a Shaniac)
So, the Ovilus was introduced. And it spazzed out in the little boy’s room, especially when Ryan was interacting with it.
Seems like a big deal, doesn’t it? Well, like the title says, that’s some bullshit, and here’s why, using evidence from Unsolved.
The Ovilus works off environmental factors. One of these factors is electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Electromagnetic fields are a pretty big deal in ghost hunting. I don’t really understand why, but the point of this “big deal” is that this is not the only time we’ve seen electromagnetic fields in Unsolved. Let’s take it back to the Sallie House real quick. Now, when they’re in the basement (38:25 ish if y’all are wondering), before Shane lies down on the pentagram, the ghost hunter they’ve called in says that his EMF measurements are going crazy because of some device in the Sallie House basement. It’s a “false read” according to the guy who does this for a living. This device is a pretty common thing in houses.
What’s to say that such a device isn’t in the Williams’ house? In fact, I would be more surprised if it wasn’t. And that device has to be somewhere. I would guess the attic, a crawlspace, a basement, or outside, meaning that it could be close but not visible from the little boy’s room. So how does this device play into the Ovilus?
Again, the Ovilus works off the EMF readings. If the EMF readings are messed up because of such a device, then the Ovilus would be messed up too.
The Ovilus is bullshit; but it is entertaining to watch Ryan freak out about it.
Paranormal Chaos: Exploring the Butterfly Effect in Instrumental Trans Communication (ITC)
The butterfly effect refers to the notion that small causes can result in large effects. The concept comes from chaos theory which studies the behavior of dynamic systems that are very sensitive to initial conditions.
Chaotic systems are deterministic in that their future behavior is fully determined by initial conditions. However they are unpredictable over long-term time horizons.
Although chaotic systems appear random, they are characterized by underlying patterns and order to include: repetitive orbits, strange attractors and fractals.
Chaotic systems are found throughout nature to include: weather, population models, economic and social interactions. A canonical chaos pattern is a butterfly effect seen in phase space graphs.
To explore the butterfly effect in connection with ITC events, a magnetometer was used to measure changes in magnetic fields generated by a Ovilus-X ITC device. Elements of the experimental design were modeled on a demonstration of the effect involving magnetic oscillating pendulums.
The Ovilus-X consists of a vocal synthesizer coupled with magnetic and thermal sensors to produce dictionary or phonetic speech. In the experiment, the Ovilus-X was set to phonetic mode.
Magnetic time series were recorded using a Hall-effect magnetic field sensor using data acquisition software. Measurements were taken at one sample per second. The data collection run lasted approximately ten minutes (Figure 1).
Phase space diagrams were used to plot magnetic field strength (G), measured in Gauss, and velocity (V). Velocity at time (t) is given by V = ΔG = Gt – Gt-1.
The lower phase space graph is nominally suggestive of a butterfly effect. There is an elliptical region of attraction characterized by dense orbits in the upper right and lower left quadrants. However, there were no dense orbits in the outermost regions (Figure 3).
The upper phase space graph is the same display but without connecting lines. The plot generally, though not uniformly, exhibits a high degree of order and repetition in the region of attraction (Figure 2).
Variations on this experiment will continue to explore whether there may be a hidden order to what are otherwise commonly perceived as random ITC events.
