The scent of pepper and garlic wafted up from the pot, condensation dripping down as he sat the lid to the side, dipping a piece of bread into the broth to get a taste of it. Unbearably and unusually spicy, the sort of sting that made weaker men swear their taste buds were just burned off; he almost agreed with them, but the person he was waiting for lost her taste buds ages ago — at least that was the impression her massacre of his dishes left him with.
Tonight, there was no need. He made it as terrible as she liked, and why not add a little culinary torture along to the grilling he was about to receive?
Putting the lid back on, he lowered the temperature of the stove, checked on the dessert, signed his medical power-of-attorney and opened a bottle of wine, in that order. It took less than a minute from her bedroom door to his; he calculated it would take her five minutes to get to his bedroom, giving her time to ready herself and step away from what she was doing, even, hopefully, not to have her head stuck in a padd (even if that would leave him with a pot of uneatable chilli).
It only took three minutes for the door to ding.
