Owen Bones - “Mach One” (feat. Tunji Ige & lil aaron)
SXSW 2017 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2
Pairs Well With…Metro Boomin, Boi-1da, Kaytranada
Owen Bones’ wheelhouse is in sparse, trap-infused beats, collaborating with a variety of hip hop and pop artists, as well as presenting a strong set of instrumental tracks, across his 2016 record Dive Club. The Chicago producer finds consistent sonic stories throughout Dive Club, often using dreamy soundscapes for either downtempo rhymes or a counterpoint in intensity lyrically. The feature list is a who’s who of SXSW recommendations from the past and present, including The Cool Kids, Saba, Tunji Ige and even a straight pop-house track with Mothica. It’s good Bones includes solo trips on Dive Club, highlighted by a trio of experimentations to end the record. Industrial clangs reverberate throughout “Rebreather”, twisting into an electro-funk lullaby on “Dunktank”. He well bridges the line of rattling dissonance and warm ambience, a strong lane especially from a hip hop angle.
