So I've been drawing seriously for about 4 years now, and I feel like by now I should be "good" at it, but I still am nowhere near where I think I should be. Do you have any advice for more experienced artists to improve?

I feel exactly the same, I used to find it purely frustrating at first. I still hit walls and suffer from art block constantly.

I think the best thing to do is to try and use it as a springboard for improvement, try and figure out what it is that you feel is lacking and work on improving that or changing your approach to that thing.

Experienced artists generally can be more self critical of their own work because they have a more in depth understanding of fundamentals and they’ve been (generally) longer exposed to professional artist’s work.

It feels frustrating, but the knowledge that allows you to be self critical is a really useful tool.

The advice is the same for everyone regardless of experience: practise. Identify your weak areas and practise practise practise. You really do get out what you put in, so if your results are not meeting your own expectations then you may want to re-examine and evaluate how you are attempting to achieve those results. For instance, the amount of time you allocate to drawing per day. For instance, the subject material you draw. For instance, low-effort doodles and ticking off a box versus higher-effort drawings and paying attention to technique. The list can go on.

If we are to talk about feelings, I too do not feel as though I am satisfied with where I am. You can always be better. It’s dissatisfaction with your current state that drives desire to improve, to take action and make change day by day. But it is also a fact that when the vehicle you are riding is purely your own effort and nothing else, where you “should” be is exactly where you are. I am not better than I am now because I have not tried harder to be better. If I am dissatisfied (and I am), then it follows that I should try harder.

This of course can land you in a perpetual state of unhappiness with your current position and a persistent notion that you should be constantly trying harder today than you were yesterday, so it’s a thought process that requires management. What I’m really trying to say is, if you care enough about something like drawing, chances are you may never reach a point where you think, “I’m good now, I feel satisfied with where I am”. Or if you do, you may find boredom following shortly after. Hold on to that feeling that you could be better. It’s your fuel.

Audition for a community show! There’s a chance you’ll get ensemble, and that’s where EVERYONE starts out. :) If you have a passion for theatre, why not get involved? Just be careful not to let your expectations get too high. You probably shouldn’t be aiming for Broadway, especially if you can’t sing. Just get involved for the love of it. :) Oh, and remember, there are plenty of behind-the-scenes positions you could do if performing isn’t your thing! ALSO keep in mind that you’re still very young, and maybe with some training, and as your voice matures, you might improve a lot!

Speaking from a stage manager’s point of view here.  There are a lot of actors on Broadway who don’t sing.  There are also a lot of roles in shows besides being “the lead.”  Shows are built with a ensemble of performers who play a variety of roles.  Broadway isn’t just musicals, there are amazing plays that get produced both off and on Broadway every season.

You could also look into voice lessons.  15 is too young to think a career that hasn’t even started is over.  You have so much time to learn and grow.

I am glad you came to me – don’t be sorry. I shall try to help.

For one, Broadway isn’t just musicals! Remember that there are lots of wonderful straight plays on Broadway for actors with absolutely no ability to sing. Non-musicals are still lots of fun and very important.

For another, remember that musicals aren’t just lead, singing, belting roles. A really strong dancer with a good-but-not-spectacular voice could be in the chorus. Or there are some roles in musicals, supporting and lead, that don’t require any singing – just speaking or mute parts – or don’t require strong singing because they’re more spoken-in-rhythm/character songs.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY…theatre is more than Broadway. Theatre is regional theatre and local professional theatre companies and community theatre and school theatre and even church theatre. They’re all the same wonderful, amazing art form. I know we all dream of being on Broadway (or the West End or wherever), but it’s important to remember that we can find enjoyment and fulfillment in our art by doing theatre at other places, professional and otherwise. If you love it, DO IT. Work at it. Take singing lessons and join your school chorus/choir (and any other local singing groups), if you can, to get better. No one is born as good as they can be; everyone has to work to improve to their best. If it makes you happy, the work will still be hard, but it will be worth the satisfaction and you’ll enjoy a lot of it. Keep doing musicals AND try non-musicals to improve regular acting and get more experience so that even if you aren’t the best singer at the audition, your superior acting can get you that better part.

Maybe you won’t ever be on Broadway. Most people aren’t. Maybe you won’t even be a professional actor, if you don’t choose to pursue this in college and beyond. But that doesn’t mean you should give up on doing musical theatre. It can still do SO many things for you and give you so many skills that are worthwhile. Plus, everyone deserves a hobby they enjoy where they can have friends. How many people on their high school’s football team play for the NFL? It is still worth doing musicals, I promise. Do them forever. In high school, in your college’s drama department (or just their drama club!), when you grow up and have a regular job that you leave and go to community theatre rehearsal for the musical. It’s always going to be worth it. And maybe, if you keep working and keep your passion alive and grow your skillset, you will be doing it to earn the paycheck – on Broadway or off.
