They had gotten there too late. How stupid could they be... Letting him go and battle Baal by himself? Surely... surely they could get him back to Sangonomiya in time, right?
RIGHT??
“No, no no no no no NO!” Atsushi all but rushed from their spot to Kazuha’s side, all but ripping off various pieces of their kimono to try and stop the bleeding, “Don’t apologize, we just have to get you back to Sangonomiya, she can help!” Oh... why did they have to freeze up now? Why couldn’t they do anything to stop the bleeding... Why-
You’re weak, forget trying to help and let him die. You’re too late anyway.
That unnerving voice in the back of their mind, nagging and drilling what they already knew into their mind- they were weak, they couldn’t save anyone no matter how hard they tried and it was tiring trying to... the headmaster was always there. And they wished he wasn’t.
“Kazuha I’m not angry, I’m just- I- why- WHY didn’t you ask us to help? DON’T fall asleep on me, you hear me??” They snapped, growing frantic- refusing to move from their spot and face the Tenryou commission- if the archon wanted their friend she’d have to pry them off of him.
“Do NOT- I just- I just need to get you back to the islands, y-yeah!!”
They couldn’t let him die here, this wasn’t the place their friend should meet their end. They wouldn’t allow it... So taking the time to pick him up, Atsushi looked around, panicked and watching the crowd before taking off- was this how he felt?
Was this how Kazuha felt running away from the statue of a god when their friend perished beneath the harsh strike of lightning, masterless vision in hand...? They couldn’t let Kazuha die there, they couldn’t let Baal take his vision...
They couldn’t let their friend be buried among the ice-cold statue of a god.
