12. We were pretending to be lovers but I’m not pretending anymore and I have to know if you feel the same way

They say if you love something, let it free. If it comes back, it was meant to be.

We’re inside a coffee a shop, just talking as usual. We needed a break from everyone else; needed a break from faking. From pretending.

But what if it wasn’t meant to be?

It wasn’t much of a pretend anymore; I loved her. Someone as cold as me, loving someone as warm as her. When did the cliches stop?

I won’t know until I tell her.

I needed to tell her right now, before we left. Before I had to pretend to pretend. Before everything was ruined.

“Lena…”

I’m telling her now, it can’t wait any longer.

“Amé, there’s something I need to tell you.” I moved my gaze from my almost-empty cup to her. Her, who always seemed to fit me, while me, who always stuck out. Her chronic accelerator was buzzing lightly, but no one cared because she was their hero. But I got hateful glares, many citizens still hating me for what I did to Mondetta.

“Yes, chérie?” I said, nervousness evident in my voice. Was she going to tell us we needed to stop pretending? That this was over?

As if she had read my mind, she spoke softly. “I think we should stop pretending.”

Instantaneously, my heart dropped and my pulse quickened. I quickly remembered the three places to easily exit. “Oh? Why’s that?” I kept my voice as even and stone cold as I could.

How do I say this?

“Amé, we should…”

It was hard to breathe.

“Yes?”

How do I tell her I love her?

I stopped breathing as she inhaled deeply. “Hun, I, uh…” She looked anywhere but me. “I love you!”

Don’t look at her, don’t look at her, don’t–

The feeling of doom settled down within as I registered her words. I smiled lightly. “I love you, too, ange.”

She shook her head frantically. “No, no, I mean like love love you, darlin’, not any of that pretend cack.”

I laughed softly. “I know, mon amor, I know.”

“So this is what we are now? For real?” She asked, blushing as she looked off to the side of the table.

“For real.” I confirmed.

God, my purple girlfriend.
