Enough about Silksong, instead, what's your favorite beetle and why is it cooler that a japanese rhinoceros beetle, go
The Ox Beetle (Strategus aloeus) because it was the first beetle I ever formed a small bond with.
In April of 2020 this Ox Beetle was drowning in our pool and I rescued him. Took him a while to get better. He was HUGE, the biggest wild beetle I’d ever seen!
As I started learning about him I found that his species is also very peculiar because Males have 2 varieties, that being “Major” and “Minor” males with big or smaller horns respectively.
Charlie, as I called mine, was a Minor male.
And as I kept observing his behavior I noticed how he would try and bury in my skin, by folding up his feet and using his sharp “elbow” as a shovel to dig.
Really cool and I’m so happy to have had that experience. I let Charlie go soon after. I hope he had a good life.
Funnily enough, the Ox beetle is a type of Rhinoceros Beetle lol
I tried my best to design an ox beetle larvae mask, it’s rather simplified because I struggle to draw details but this is what I came up with:
Based on these pictures:
It’s not perfect, and the antennae are in the wrong place I think but I’m still pretty happy with it
a female ox beetle ???????? who knows
quite friendly and freakishly strong, we placed her into the compost pot where she immediately drilled into the soil so ya
@zebrashort submitted: This lovely beast I found in Southern Texas when visiting a friend. Could you perchance id it?
And no id needed here, if I recall correctly, this is a female ox beetle!!! :)
I can! It's a pipevine swallowtail. And yes a very pretty ox beetle lady :)
Go my scarabs!
Beetle island Megs! Many, many megs...
Also, because I felt like it, the gals get horns, too. Because everyone deserves cool horns.
I turned some beetles I painted in watercolor into a riso print 🪲
