This whole trip to the past had been one big visit to the twilight zone. It was like stepping into a photo or picture book and visiting the people inside. Gohan had never been more out of place. A stranger in a strange land. Now though, he could feel his and Trunks’ visit coming to a head, to a climax, to a stopping point. The Bio Android Cell had announced that in one week, he’d be holding a tournament to decide the fate of the planet. It seemed everyone was depending on his father to step up to the plate, so he had no reason to face off or participate in the tournament. That being said, he had wanted to do something since he arrived to the past... but he’d never gotten a chance too. Things had been moving too fast.
Though, here he was now, standing in his old childhood home. He hadn’t had the guts to see his mother in the future, but he was gonna see her now. Maybe this would make up for it. Who was he kidding though? It wouldn’t. He’d need to face his mother there as much as he needed to face the one here. This encounter would just prepare him for the encounter though. He catches a look of himself in the reflection of a picture glass... a young picture of him, his father, and his mother when he was young... still wearing the hat with the dragon ball on it. In the reflection he sees an older, grizzled warrior who no longer had any of that. All he had was a scar over his eye and a dead man’s gi.
When he hears the door of the bedroom open to the main room, he stands up like a soldier standing to attention and swallows a lump in his throat. At the sight of the Ox Princess, his mother... ChiChi... he breaks like a house of cards and his tight fists loosen as his lips tremble into a smile. He knows it’s not his mother... but something... makes this encounter feel so hard. All he can croak out is.
“Hi... Mother.”
