Today at the SAAs Heather Hurst and Leonard Ashby showed some of the work they’ve been doing at Oxtotitlán, Guerrero. For the past couple of years, the cave paintings at Oxtotitlán have been rephotographed with multi-spectral imagery in order to get a better look and understanding of the images painted on the cave walls. The above three images, perhaps the three most famous images from the site, have been extensively revised since they were first drawn in the 1960s. This will lead to eventual new reinterpretations of the iconographic elements within the images themselves. It’s not my place to say what those changes are just now, but keep your eyes peeled for future publications on this site.
