Bustin’ Loose

Directed by Oz Scott.  Released in 1981 but it was filmed a couple of years pryor (see what I did there?).

I love Richard Pryor and really was glad one of his movies was released in 1981 so I could blog about it for this December series.  The movie is pretty evenly rated on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes coming in at about a 60%.  I don’t know that the film is better than that - it is schmaltzy - but I enjoyed it.

The story starts with a bumbled robbery attempt and Richard Pryor seeks redemption by driving some wayward kids and their care giver from Pennsylvania to Washington.  IMDB says he is driving them to Pennsylvania, that’s wrong.

The care giver / social worker type is played by Cicely Tyson who fits just fine in the saccharine role of do-gooder.  She’s believable.  And I liked all the kids.  One of them is blind and when the bus encounters a KKK group all the kids pretend they’re blind.  It’s funny.

What I didn’t expect was the cut throat back stories some of these kids pull off.  I cried a good bit.  All the while Richard Pryor’s character is telling Cicely Tyson’s character that he is not a social worker, he just drives the bus.  But of course he helps them and helping them helps him.  It’s a bit Bad News Bears-ish.  Where all parties have to change, and they do.

Most of the movie was shot before he had the accident with the fire - but it was finished after.  I know his comedy cleaned up after that incident.  But this is essentially a kids’ movie and he made it before the incident.  Go figure.
