James had known something changed with Sirius in the summer before sixth year, but he’d never been able to pinpoint what it was. He just knew there was a marked difference in his best friend’s behavior at the time. His concern had dwindled once Sirius got back into the swing of school, though. As his behavior slowly returned to the Marauder-esque shenanigans they were so used to, James found it easier to write off the earlier behavior as nonstop exposure to the Black family over the summer, and so he’d stopped worrying about it.
Now that they were graduated and plunged into the chaotic world of war via their work for the Order, James worried about Sirius’ odd behavior even less than before. There just wasn’t time or energy to devote to the occasional off-coloured comment in between James’ missions and his attempts to plan his wedding. As with everything else James did, he was devoting his full attention (or trying) to being the most involved groom to ever walk the face of the planet. Between that and working, he was stretching himself thin.
“Maaatteee,” he groaned as he walked back into headquarters after a night of patrolling with Pete. He found Sirius in the living room and collapsed across him, sporting a small cut on his cheek. “Been a bloody long night, man. You ever go to sleep or have you been up all night?”
