“Remember, your final papers discussing Ovid’s Metamorphoses are due to me this Friday. If you have any questions or would like to discuss drafts, my office hours are on the syllabus, but you’re also more than welcome to email me. Have a good one, folks.” Ben said, lips quirking in a polite grin as he tucked his reading glasses into the small carrying case he kept with him. He didn’t need the lenses, he had perfect vision. But, appearances were everything. From the perfectly tailored shirts that he favored during his classes to the leather satchel that leaned against the lectern-- it was all to create the appearance of what all these children thought an academic looked like. Pulling his coat on, Ben headed out of the lecture hall and made his way back across campus towards his office.
“Professor Campbell? I was wondering, I had a quick question about the discussion we had in class.” Ben didn’t turn around, though he slowed his gait to a more comfortable walking speed as one of his students hurried to meet him. Glancing over at the young man, Ben offered a warm smile. Matt Davis. Sophomore. Declared major was pre-law and, if he was doing as well in his other classes as he was in Ben’s, he had promise. Logical by nature, but with enough social wherewithal to not be the “devil’s advocate” student.
“Mathew! How can I help you?” He asked. He went through the motions as he always did. Filtering out the specific words to get the gist of the over-eager babble-- something about wanting to be clear that Matt wasn’t arguing against Jenna’s point, no no-- Ben nodded in agreement, offering his feedback when necessary, but letting the boy take the lead on the conversation. The students liked it, being heard. Being seen, or whatever they said. And he was happy to indulge their pretentions. Meanwhile, Ben wondered what Matt’s insides would look like on the altar in the woods, basking in the glory of the full moon. Would the boy scream? He looked like he would.
“Please, sit,” Ben said as he unlocked the door to his office, slipping the key into his pocket. Flicking on the light, he settled into the computer chair behind his university provided desk. It was a modest office, nothing too ostentatious, all by design. Even the curated books on his shelves had ulterior purposes. Their spines were worn with enough age to show their use, free of dust to imply he studied them frequently, but with carefully coordinated book jackets to create an inviting feeling. Every facet of his appearance played into what these children wanted to see.
He listened without paying attention, allowing the boy to work himself into an academic frenzy. There was a hunger in the boy’s eyes, a desire to prove himself in the eyes of one of his favorite professors. The timing was right. Raising a hand, Ben stopped Matt mid-sentence, gesturing to his computer. “I very much appreciate this discussion, Matthew, I do. But, I have a meeting to prepare for and these are not my office hours.” The boy fumbled over his words, like he expected. “However. I hold a salon at my house every now and then for promising young students. I would be more than happy to discuss your ideas then. I’m sure you’ll be attending, hm?” An excited nod, a flustered exit, and when the door shut, Ben smiled once more.
Perfect.
