let go your heart
The back pain had been there all day, but she had thought nothing of it. She was pregnant, of course she was going to be constantly having aches and pains. She was literally carrying another life inside of her. It was never going to be an easy ride. It was normal, she reassured Lenny as she left for the day. What was not so normal, was the rush of blood. The blood that covered her legs, that stained the couch bright red. She couldn’t help but think about how hard that would be to remove. That she should probably just replace the furniture. Trying not to panic, left a fast-paced message on Lenny’s voicemail, telling her wife to meet her at the hospital. She wasn’t sure how she got there, it was like she was on auto-pilot. There was nothing they could have done, they had said. It was too late. They were so sorry. Lizzy took it all in, nodding. The whole time, her eyes were trained on the screen in front of her, the scan of what had been her child.
She was wheeled into a private room, where she found herself just staring into space. She felt numb. Like this was some sick, twisted nightmare. She had been so happy. She was living out her dream life, she wondered why she was so surprised that it was being ripped from under her. Surely no-one could have all the luck? No tears fell from her eyes while she was alone, waiting. She didn’t think she was alone for that long, although it felt like years. It wasn’t until she heard the door open, the familiar figure of her wife walk into the room that was when she began to crack, the sobs escaping her throat before she could stop them. “I’m sorry.”
