Something in the Way || Daxton & Jessica
Will you tell me what just happened?
Daxton felt Jessica’s grasp and turned to face her, his eyes on the ground. The scuffed toe of an old sneaker tapped nervously on the speckled tile and he had to take a few breaths before meeting Jessica’s eyes and responding.
“Wren and I used to date. But it’s uh, it’s more complicated than that.” Daxton’s eyes held a distant pain that Jessica would, hopefully, never know. They held his internals feelings, his feelings that said: It’s complicated because she was the love of my life and I fucked up and every time I see her my heart breaks a little more and I remember what a monster I am and I don’t want you to know what I’m capable of because I don’t even know who I am anymore, if I ever did and being confronted with my past is terrifying and I’ve been trying so hard to start over and fix everything but I can’t. I can’t fix it.
I can’t fix it.
Feebly attempting to smile, Daxton broke away from Jess and grabbed the shopping cart, moving towards the checkout. “I think we’ve got everything let’s head back yeah?” Looking over his shoulder and not getting the expected response, Daxton dropped his little charade and took a step back towards where Jessica stood and hushed his voice, looking down at her. “I’ll tell you more about it later okay? Just not here,” Daxton motioned around him for emphasis, “amidst soup cans and nosey housewives.” He softened his face and gave a small, slightly more convincing smirk.
“C’mon, I’m looking forward to a home cooked meal!” With a wiggle of his eyebrows, Dax took Jessica’s hand and again went towards the checkout.
