ARTICLES | CHROMEO TALKS NEW ALBUM, VIDEO GAMES, AND DAFT PUNK
Dave 1 and P-Thug, also known as disco-funk duo Chromeo sat down with BBC to chat about their August release White Women, but they didn’t stop there. Both Chromeo and Daft Punk share a similar style of music by evoking a chic, 70′s disco atmosphere while never lacking on the funk. But when asked about their differences, Dave 1 explains “Daft Punk did it in a way that really pays homage to the forefathers in as much as they involved them in the record. The way we tried to do it is involve people like Solange (Knowles, Beyonce’s sister) and Toro y Moi and Ezra from Vampire Weekend – in other words we take people from the indie sphere and bring them to this funk universe.” As fans of the robots, Chromeo is honestly just excited that the music they love is being exposed to a larger audience, who for the most part (Taylor Swift fans) are accepting of this retro re-immergence.
The mastering process of Chromeo‘s fourth studio album, White Women, is taking place at the Metropolis studio in London. They thought it was important to travel to England for this because “In the UK you’ve got this huge 80s synth-pop tradition with producers liCke Trevor Horn and that was really inspiring for us to come and mix the record here and master the record here, it was the logical step. I think for us its important to master our albums like an electronic record, otherwise its too retro. It has to sound good next to (Mercury-nominees) Disclosure, it can’t sound like a record from the 70s. That would be boring.”
These days artists don’t have the pleasure to depend on digital streaming sites like Soundcloud and one market that has recently skyrocketed in terms of music sales, video games. With tracks featured on two Fifa titles and the racing game Dirt 3, Dave 1 concludes that “For a band like us it would be ridiculous to sit back and build our success on radio, its an artistic challenge for us.” P-Thug agrees by adding, “They’re like mini labels now, the video gaming companies.” Dave suggests that ”They’re bigger than labels, they sell more” and he’s not wrong. The Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) tells us that the biggest digital sector in the UK is in fact video games.

As we await the completion of Chromeo‘s newest release, the two artists will be preparing for their upcoming Come Alive tour and a few stops at festivals around the US, including Buku Music + Art Project and Coachella.

Canadian duo Chromeo unveiled a second cut off their upcoming album White Women today. Sexy Socialite is a foot tapping, funk filled, KILLER track. Dave 1 and P-Thug can do no wrong. Lead single Over The Shoulder was already a winner, and now we have this awesome tune. It's mega snazzy and super groovy. The track even features Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem on drums. Chromeo always knew how to be both sexy and silly at the same time. And we all love it.
