‘[B]oth Barney and Vivien believed that Lesbianism represented less a sexual preference than a total commitment to women and the values they represented that they were convinced of the moral basis of their homosexuality. Barney was very careful, in “Forbidden Love,” to distinguish Lesbianism from vice—that is, from mere sensual or sexual pleasure devoid of higher emotions: “It is vice where there is neither emotion nor love nor true passion.” Lust, in the absence of passionate love capable of transcending self, was clearly wrong to both Barney and Vivien.’
