母親甚麼也沒有說,有風停在無名天使的翼上,有白石粉灰飄漫的背景之前,石級長而冷峭地瞪著她,但見她,一步一回顧。
西西,<我城>
I was quite sure I’d never seen him before. Long and leanly muscular, he dwarfed the molded plastic elementary school chair he was sitting in. Mahogany hair, straight and short. He looked my age, maybe a year older, and he sat with his tailbone against the edge of the chair, his posture aggressively poor, one hand half in a pocket of dark jeans.
Chapter 1, p.8, p.9 (TFiOS)
And in come Augustus Waters, the Designated Love Interest. Yes, of course that’s who he is – look at the way he’s being described. He’s strong, older, codified indomitable. He’s not just got poor posture, it’s aggressively, purposefully poor. More than that, he won’t stop staring at her all the damn time. From the male gaze to his appearance to the machismo, Waters smacks of hyper-masculinity, and not in a good way. Of course he’s the love interest! This is so heteronormative. If he turned out to be Kevin Khatchadourian it would not surprise me in the least, is all I’m saying.
I didn’t want to take the elevator because taking the elevator is a Last Days kind of activity at Support Group, so I took the stairs.
Chapter 1, p.8 (TFiOS)
Isn’t this massively ableist? Making taking the elevator down a ‘Last Days’ thing is also flawed, since some people are far from Death’s door and need the elevator anyway (e.g. people in wheelchairs and people with chronic illnesses saving spoons). Saving your breath is okay!
There is only one thing in this world shittier than biting it from cancer when you’re sixteen, and that’s having a kid who bites it from cancer.
Chapter 1, p.8 (TFiOS)
How did she come to this conclusion? She’s essentially driven the focus of her own possible death onto her parents for… martyrdom? Is this yet more of the apathy we’re coming to expect from her or something else?
