"Abbas has run the Palestinian Authority for 19 years. The fact that the 88-year-old is expected to stay on as head of the new technocratic Palestinian government is likely to be controversial. Abbas has not held elections since 2006, and his last elected term as president ended in 2009. In a recent poll conducted in the West Bank and Gaza, the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research found that 88 percent of Palestinians wanted him to resign."
