Section 5 – Evaluation (D2) & Report (P10)

From my previous post, I spent my time constructing my evaluations for my overall project product and project experience, time management and difficulties. In addition, I included suggestions on improvements to the product and suggestions on what I could do better if I had to do another project on a different product. Section 4 Development Stage - Design Development: Another CAD Update

A 3D assembled drawing of my DJ Desk/boot: On AutoCAD i used view-ports to show the drawing from the drawing model to a template. This drawing provides information based on all of the components, the “List Of Parts”  on the right has all the information about the components. On The Template i used multi-leaders to annotate the drawing to point out the components.

Project Update/Summary

In my overall project work I have completed Section 4. I have been able to plan and produce project solutions, I have outlined my project solutions in a flow chart presentation; I produced main boxes which includes the 5 development, this has been shown in a previous post of mine (Scroll down to see the presentation flow chart). I have implemented the plan and produced a project solution. This objective focused on product development and product manufacture. On the product development side, I conducted research on the engineering materials, fixings and fasteners and fabrication/machining methods. All of the information I gathered from this research are relevant and beneficial towards my product.

Further research was focused on the ergonomics of my product, legislations and standards. Following on that I have been able to show the improved solutions by producing 3D models of the product (DJ Desk) and typing a paragraph of the improvements in terms of Design for Manufacture. The 3D drawings I have produced is the DJ Desk and the components (Concealed Soss Hinge, Screw, support stand for the frame and a DJ equipment stand *Still Pending*.

My BOM (Bill of Materials) currently stands at £824.23, this price is very high for one unit however this is due to the amount of material that will be needed for the manufacturing and fabrication process, also the material that will be used is at an estimate, so the BOM could drop if less material is needed. Finally, I have also drafted a Final Product Specification which is based on my original PDS.

Section 4 – Development Stage – [P7] – P.N.A Project Update

Everything for my project is running smooth, I have found relevant and accurate information that is related to the materials I have chosen for my DJ Desk, the material properties. Fasteners and fixing that will be useful and needed for joining components together and the overall product assembly. A few modifications have been made to my CAD drawings, I have made small adjustments to the dimensions for the secondary tables by increasing the surface area, increasing the height of the desk and the thickness of the tables/components for the DJ Desk. The modifications to the CAD drawing is under-going, I am planning to start drawing the fasteners, plan out and complete a BOM (bill of materials and move on to the product manufacture stage.

Section 4 – Development Stage – [P7] – Ergonomics, Legislations & Standards

Ergonomic: The DJ Desk’s main purpose is to hold DJ equipment and extra sound equipment that the user may place on or around the product. I will be focusing on making the Desk comfortable for the user, the most important pats that I will carefully observe the persons: head, neck, elbows, arms and height. The main and secondary table will have a wide surface area. A wide surface area will be very useful because s/he will be able to have space to stretch their arm, the wide surface area for the tables is still pending. The edges for the frame and table will have a coating or a separate material that will be attached onto it, the protector will be soft and comfortable for the user to place their arms if they wish too. In addition, the protector decreases the chances of any possible injuries occurring between the product, user and surroundings.

As mentioned before in one of my previous posts: ISO 21016:2007 this standard specifies tests methods that will be used to determine the strength, durability and stability for all types of office tables/desks designed for seated or standing position.

Section 4 – Development Stage – [P7] – Fasteners (b)

As you can see on the table each hinge is manufactured from similar materials. Also they all have good corrosion resistance. Hidden hinges have a higher strength limit compared to the door and cabinet hinges, that have a lower strength limit. They may not be suitable for a DJ Desk, this is because the Desk will be carrying average loads and each components needs to be able withstand any load it encounters. Hidden hinges and door hinges are lightweight so they won’t have an effect on the overall product’s weight, whereas cabinet hinges are average in weight. It is possible that hidden hinges will add more weight to the overall product. I want the overall produce to be as lightweight as possible so I would use the device that is lightweight.

Hidden hinges have a higher price range compared to the others, regardless I still choose this device because of its appearance, that will not have any effect on the overall design of my product, its acceptable and impressive properties.

Section 4 Update 1.1

Following on the previous post the next stage was to find out about ergonomics and legislations. While researching ergonomics, I had to focus on the person and their body features, this will include there: head, neck, elbows, arms and height. I carefully looked at these factors because I want to certain that the consumer feels comfortable around the product and while s/he is carrying out different tasks while using it. There are many legislations that talk about various products: how safe they are around users and certain requirements that has to be met and abide certain laws. I am currently looking for more legislations/standards. So far I have come across one standard which works well with what I am designing. (ISO 21016:2007 this standard specifies tests methods that will be used to determine the strength, durability and stability for all types of office tables/desks designed for seated or standing position.)
