DJI Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian – BEST DRONE EVER
Stairs to Heaven with Drohne 4k // DJI Phantom 4 Pro
DJI makes the P4 attractive once more....with a Pro Kit
There is a stark difference between what is desirable and lustful. It’s like the hot blond on the beach and the Ferrari parked by the French Riviera, and it’s not the hot blond that I would lust after.
The Ferrari would give you more oodles of fun on the mountain roads while the hot blond is only good for a shag in a fancy hotel. So where does that put the Phantom 4 Pro?
For me at least, the Mavic Pro would be desirable. It is gadget that I would not mind heaving around in my bag whereas for the P4, you would have to positively bribe me to carry one. Its rigid frame, larger than a football form factor has not endeared me to their aerial cult. I would happily saunter out with an old film camera than to carry something like this on my back. Now the P4 is somewhat dated. Not as dated as it would be medieval but fast approaching vintage status.
Knowing that the Mavic Pro would cannibalize the sale of the older P4, the blokes from Shenzhen saw a need to update the old P4 pro to the new P4 Pro. Now the “Pro” moniker isn’t just cosmetic, there has been some serious tinkering on the part of DJI to revitalize it. Take for example the air frame, which is now made of magnesium and titanium, the same alloys that the make up the Sukhoi 34 Hellduck that are now terrorizing jihadist in Syria.
Then you have the upgraded camera, which shoots 4K at 60fps with 20 mega pixel stills. Flight time has also improved a wee bit to 30 mins while the range is in the ballpark of 7km.
There are now two collision detection sensors in the rear of the drone, along with one each on the left and right side that are infra red. Now I don’t know about you but IR sensors don’t work very well in broad daylight. So I suspect you might still be able to bump it around a bit from side to side.
The rest of the drone remains remarkably the same. The remote controller has been updated with a dedicated LCD screen instead of having to borrow your iPhone display. But at US$1600, it is a bit hard to swallow if I am going to take this anywhere but the park where I buy ice cream and watch pretty girls stroll by.
Serious amateurs will no doubt find the P4 Pro an attractive offering but it is not a must buy drone. My main gripe has been always been the size of the damn thing, and unless I am being paid an exorbitant amount to film someone’s wedding, I would never dream of using one.
That is reason why I wouldn’t rush out to buy the P4 Pro. Paying more for something you would only use in rare occasions seems wasteful. If I made aerial porn for a living, I would still gravitate towards the Mavic Pro. Even if the the P4 Pro beats the Mavic Pro on sheer specifications alone, you need to consider the fun factor in all things related to droning. A fun drone should be one you can take it anywhere. It should not be burden to yourself or those around you. Trusted that the Mavic Pro doesn’t have the same video capability or features as the new P4 Pro, the idea that you can take it along with you for the fun of it just makes my day.
It’s like the difference between the Porsche Cayman GTS and the new Audi TT RS—which on specifications along would beat the Porsche with a blink of an eye. Which would you take along with you for oodles of fun? Certainly not the Audi TT RS.
