Sweet Child O' Mine || Bade
Beck sighed. “Yes you are, Jade. I’ve already agreed to go with you. It’s gonna be fine.”
"I don’t wanna. It’s dumb. Besides, I don’t think Tapeworm’s in the mood today, either. He won’t stop turning fucking backflips and it’s annoying.” She reached down and prodded herself in the stomach, willing the gentle, fluttering sensations to stop. "Quit it.” In response, the flutters stopped for a few seconds, but then quickly started back up again. Jade groaned in exasperation. “You are my kid, aren’t you? Little shit.” She sighed, turning back to Beck. “Doctors are scary, okay? I don’t want them touching me. Or anywhere near me, for that matter.”
Beck rolled his eyes at her. “Well Tapeworm is just gonna have to get over it, because we’re going.” He sighed, “Jade, I know it’s scary. That’s why I cleared my entire schedule so that you wouldn’t have to do this alone. It won’t be that bad.”
"Easy for you to say. All you have to do is sit there while I get violated."
Beck knew arguing with her wasn’t going to help anything, and he really wasn’t in the mood for this. “Fine. If you’re gonna be stubborn like that, we won’t go. Just don’t expect me to drop everything to go with you next time you have a doctor’s appointment.”
Jade felt her face fall. Dammit. Ever since she’d gotten pregnant, everything just made her insanely more emotional than it used to. “No, go with me. Please. I don’t want to go by myself.” She crossed her arms over her stomach protectively. “Besides, Tapeworm is your kid, too. Don’t you wanna see him?”
"Of course I do, Jade. So does this mean you’re going?"
Jade nodded. “Yeah, I guess.” She paused. “…I’m kinda scared. Is that totally ridiculous?”
Beck shook his head. “No. It’s not. But the sooner we go, the sooner we can get it over with and you’ll see that it wasn’t that big of a deal.”
Beck and Jade had finally made it to the hospital after a very long subway ride, and had checked in with the front desk before being sent upstairs to the OB/GYN ward. They were sitting in the waiting room, waiting to be called back into the office. Jade was really starting to get nervous; her heart was racing, so Tapeworm wouldn’t hold still, and his constant motion only added to her anxiety. She was pretending to read so Beck wouldn’t know how freaked she was, mindlessly flipping the pages of a magazine in her lap.
Beck looked up at Jade. “There’s no way you’re reading that fast.” He put a hand on her shoulder. “You nervous?”
"Maybe a little," she admitted. "You know how I am with doctors… What about you? You nervous?"
Beck nodded. “Yeah,” he wasn’t really, but he didn’t want Jade to feel alone in being kind of freaked out. “A little.”
Jade could tell he was lying, but she knew he was only doing it to make her feel better, so she was okay with it. She started to say something else, trying to make conversation, but was interrupted by the sound of a door opening.
"Jadelyn West?" A nurse asked, looking up from her clipboard.
"Come on back and we’ll get you checked out."
Jade tossed her magazine aside and shoved her hands in her pockets, ambling after the nurse on shaky legs with Beck close behind her. They were shown to a sickeningly pink room, where Jade was directed to sit on the exam table while Beck crammed himself into a hard plastic chair beside the nurse.
"You’re here for your first ultrasound, right?"
"Eighteen. My birthday was July 26."
"You’re a young one," she commented. "This the father?"
"Y-yeah, yeah, that’s him." Jade could almost feel the judgment radiating from the woman, and it made her really uncomfortable. She felt impossibly small and out of place perched on the edge of the exam table. She answered a few more questions, all of them asked with the same borderline accusatory tone. Jade didn’t like the nurse’s disapproving demeanor, and she definitely didn’t like Beck being so far away from her, but she knew she didn’t really have a say in the matter. She sat rigidly, swinging her feet back and forth while the nurse took her vitals and scribbled things on her chart, finally leaving her with the instructions to get comfortable on the table and that the ultrasound technician would be right in. With that, she left, closing the door behind her with a click.
Jade used her hands to scoot herself further up onto the table, crossing her arms and stretching her legs out in front of her. She eyed Beck, still sitting awkwardly and uncomfortably in his chair. “Can you come here?”
Beck stood up. “Sure.” He walked over to the exam table. “Are you okay?”
"No, I’m nervous as hell! What if the kid has like six heads or something?”
Beck chuckled, putting a hand over Jade’s. “I’m sure Tapeworm is fine, okay? And if it does happen to have more than the average amount of heads, we’ll still love our very unique child just the same, right?”
Jade rolled her eyes. "You can. I’m not making any promises.”
They sat in a kind of awkward silence for a few moments, neither of them sure what to say next. But then, she thought of something. She inched the hem of her shirt up to her ribs, pulled her hand out from under Beck’s and guided his palm to her stomach, below her navel. Seeing the alarm in his eyes, she couldn’t help but scoff lightly. “Don’t look so horrified, Beck, it’s not like you’ve never touched me before. That’s how we got in this mess, remember?” She laughed. “Relax, okay? I just want you to feel him move. Here.” She placed her hands on top of his, pressing slightly so he’d be more likely to feel the baby’s subtle motion. “Feel it? It’s like a flutter, kind of.”
He sat for a moment, his hand awkwardly resting on Jade’s belly. After several moments of uneventful silence, he sighed. “Jade, I’m not feeling anything.” Almost as soon as he finished his sentence, he felt it. A flutter, just like Jade had said. He gasped, looking up at Jade with wide eyes.
Jade grinned. “Told you. Cool, right?”
“Yeah.” Beck nodded, still staring in awe at Jade’s stomach, waiting for something to happen again.
“Wait, say something else.”
“I don’t know!” Jade replied impatiently. “Just talk to it. It moved when you said something a minute ago, but I don’t think you felt it. I wanna see if it does it again. Just humor me.”
Beck sighed. “Fine, okay. Um, hi Tapeworm. I’m… I’m your daddy.”
"He totally just moved! Did you feel it?"
"Yeah, I did!" Beck replied with excitement. "Tapeworm, can you move again for daddy?"
Jade laughed as Tapeworm twitched yet again. “I think he likes you.”
"Shut up, no he doesn’t," he said, grinning as Tapeworm continued to flutter about.
"He’s moving more when you talk than he does when I do. So yeah, I think he does. Maybe he knows his daddy’s voice."
Just then, the door opened, and in came a technician pushing an ultrasound machine. She was smiling and Jade instantly liked her better than the cold, unfeeling nurse who had brought them back to the exam room.
"Just Jade is fine, actually," Jade replied, sitting up. "Sorry— we were just—"
"Talking to the baby. It’s fine," she replied, closing the door behind her. "I’m Christine, by the way. You feel anything yet?"
"Just flutters, mainly. Beck was seeing if he could feel it."
"Yeah," Beck replied, still smiling. "It likes my voice."
"Most babies do," Christine replied. "Trade places with me, will you, Beck? Or go around to her other side, you’ll be able to see better from there."
"Side," Jade told him. "Please. And hold my hand. I’ll need moral support if the kid does turn out to have six heads.”
Beck moved to Jade’s other side, gripping her hand. “Tapeworm’s not gonna have six heads, Jade. You can hold me to that promise, okay?”
Christine raised an eyebrow, an amused smile on her face. “Tapeworm?”
"Yeah," Jade replied sheepishly. "Nickname. I thought it was funny."
"It’s certainly unique," she agreed, switching on the machine before turning back to Jade. "May I?"
Christine snapped on a pair of gloves and squeezed some gel onto Jade’s stomach before grabbing a wand-looking thing attached to the machine.
Jade took a deep breath and squeezed Beck’s hand. “Yeah.”
Christine nodded and pressed the wand to Jade’s stomach. She slid it back and forth a few times and adjusted a couple of things on the machine before stepping aside so Beck and Jade could see the screen. “There.”
"Jade," Beck said, staring at the screen and gripping her hand more tightly, "that’s Tapeworm. That’s our baby."
"I- I know." Looking at the screen was making Jade strangely emotional. Feeling Tapeworm had been one thing, but seeing him was entirely another. It made him seem more real, somehow. Even if he was just a grainy grey shape on a screen, he was still theirs. And there was something pretty amazing about that.
"…No," she lied, swiping at her eyes with the edge of her sleeve. "And shut up."
"Your eyes are just naturally teary then, is that it?”
“Yeah, that’s it,” he replied. “Shut up.”
Christine ignored them, continuing her work without comment. She pointed out certain things on the screen while Beck and Jade stared, awestruck, occasionally laughing when Tapeworm would wriggle around. “Everything looks good,” Christine announced after a few minutes. “Go ahead and clean up,” she told Jade, handing her a washcloth so she could wipe the goo off her tummy, “and when you’re ready, go to the checkout desk. They’ll have printouts of the images for you. Okay?”
"Okay," Jade said softly. She was still pretty taken aback from what she’d just seen.
"Good deal," Christine said, patting her knee before switching the machine off and starting to leave the room. "Congratulations again!"
"We’re having a baby, Beck,” Jade muttered in disbelief as she cleaned the ultrasound gel off her skin. “Can you believe it?”
