Her life had started in Seoul but all her memories were from Jeju. She had been very young when they moved so she practically had never seen anything but this city. Her parents would take her to Seoul whenever her father had some sort of meeting because she loved a chance to see the city but other than that, she was always in the island never venturing out. Some of her friends, in fact most of them, did leave to see all the places in the world. Had Soorin ever wanted to travel herself? She never really thought about it because from the start her responsibility had been towards her family, towards her father and making sure that there was someone there to look after him. She couldn’t really say that her brother had seen the world since he had seen the military and that wasn’t necessarily a part of the world that Soorin wanted to see. But he had gotten off the island and so had Dasom unnie. She knew that their reasons had been the same of course since they both required money and it was easier to make it outside the confines of their island. The only reason Soorin couldn’t, or rather didn’t have to leave was because her brother covered more than half their expenses and she just had to meet the difference with various part time jobs on the island. If she had to make all the money on her own, well chances were that she would have ended up having to leave as well.
Luckily that wasn’t how it was and perhaps she should have been grateful to Junho for that one thing. He had been able to send money that allowed her to take care of her father, allowed her to get more time with him so that now she had memories with him for her lifetime. Ones that he didn’t get to have since he had been working to support them. There were sacrifices made on both their parts, but when she looked at it from that perspective, it seemed that he made more than her. Perhaps it wouldn’t seem that way to him but because for her the time with her father was a treasure that could not be monetized, well she was forever in his debt. That day was one of the few days that she had off, the time that would usually be filled with either lazying around at home or just walking around idly in hopes that the day would pass. Instead of doing either of those things, Soorin decided to get up and actually visit a family that was pretty much like her own. They were thrown into struggles, and it was around the time that her mother was in the hospital that she first remembered seeing their family there and from that moment forward, she grew very accustomed to seeing them. At a time when she didn’t have her daughter by her side and Soorin didn’t have her mother by hers, Mrs. Moon had truly been like a motherly figure in her life. And though she knew Dasom well when they were growing up and heard stories about her and everything she was achieving from her mother, there was time that passed between when they lost touch.
She was walking through the familiar market of her first employment when she spotted the all too familiar stand there. It was the one where she first worked and a small smile was on her features as she approached, hoping that perhaps she could make herself useful for them once more. So she called out to whoever might have been there since the front was left empty. Perhaps she would find Mrs. Moon or Dasom there and she could offer her services for the day since there was nothing else for her to do and she didn’t see a better use for her time than volunteering it to help out a family that had been so great to her.
❝ Hello, is someone there? ❞
