The Distance Between Us || Kendall & Cole
It had been a whole year, to the day since Kendall left Cambridge. Left Cole for his sake. She was still in New York. She was finishing her course in NYU, working part time in a cafe.
She was on her 5 minutes break. Outside in the back smoking a cigarette. All the thoughts, all the memories were as fresh as if it all happened just yesterday. She sighed silently as she looked down, with her free hand, brushing the hair away from her face. She missed him. She missed him everyday but Kendall knew, that what she done, was the best thing for him. No matter how much it hurt for her to do him, she had to do that in order to make him live. To make sure he had a life.
Throughout the year, Kendall had to stop so many times to try and look for him, maybe visit where he was. Just to see that he was okay. But she even told Haylee to stop her. Incase he saw her. He had to have a better life, he could have easily forgotten her. And she knew, she will never be able toforget him, or move on. Her heart wasn't set on that.
A girl came outside to tell her her break was over. With a sigh, Kendall threw her cigarette down on the floor and entered back into the cafe. as she walked to the counter, ready to take the order she froze. Through the window, she could see a familiar face, familiar everything. The person who made her heart beat ever so strongly. Looking away, she hoped he would just walk past, not notice her, get on with his life. Yet she couldn't stop herself but look again. Look again at Cole.
❝ I Remember How The Distance Tricked Us ❞
He took careful steps, always sure to keep to his right. Eyes glued to the floor as he couldn't bare the burden of brushing shoulders with a perfect stranger, to exchange glances and give a apologetic smile while their face contorts into that of distaste. He couldn't stand it, it made his stomach tie into knots and heat ripple through his chest. Knocking the breath from his lungs and compressing them flat, so his eyes stay to the ground and he counts his steps.

A palm runs along the the nape of his neck as a sigh makes its way past his chapped lips, closing his eyes as his head tips and a small pop from the vertebrate in his neck. Letting out a soft sigh of relief.
But then it happens and he doesn't mean too.
His shoulder brushes against another, and his brows raise as his head whips behind him. He drops the materials in his hand, his phone and some papers. The pigmentation of his cheeks lose color, before pink fills in the absence. Mumbling a practice apology to himself before actually putting it into the air, he closes his eyes tight before he goes to stand and his composure becomes straight.
Lidded eyes raising to capture the gaze of the familiar face - and something he hasn't felt in years slices through his chest and knocks the wind from his lungs and he gasps whilst his eyes grow wide. Whatever was in his hands had dropped all over again, he struggled for a breath but it ached his chest.
They said that time heals all things, and he feels as if he were the only exception to this.
Feeling the nerves in his chest swell and burn, rippling through his rips and flutter down into his stomach and pool in his belly. The eyes staring back at him are all to familiar, and it creates the familiar erratic palpitation of his chest that had use to fuel his body so long ago. His brows finally come to a furrow and his head subtly shakes, averting his gaze and feeling immediately timid.
His lips purse and then part, words bubble in the back of his throat but the words are stuck behind the knock of his tongue. Swallowing the clutter of incoherent thoughts with a discomfort, his name pulled at the wiring of his brain. Over and over like a fervent prayer before it finally slipped past his lips in a breathless sigh. " Dongseong? "
The others name leaves a bitter sweet taste on his tongue, it doesn't sit well and feels foreign. His eyes rest along the contours and curves of the matured visage, but the features were undeniable. This wasn't a simple stranger, this was a face he grew up with and then grew to forget and left with nothing but a memory. Only to abruptly grace his vision after almost a decade.
