He stared into the two mugs of coffee that were slid to him across the counter, giving the girl behind it a short, quick smile before returning to the table where his brother sat. The word still didn’t sit right with him. He’d been surprised that he’d even stopped ignoring his calls. After all, what was he to say to the man he still couldn’t remember?
He slid back into the booth quietly, passing the man his own mug and giving him an apologetic look up.
“Sorry...I don’t really remember how you take your coffee...”
It was a split second decision to call Gabriel, but it felt like the best; no the right decision. Even just seeing his nickname flash up on his cellphone was enough to start helping settle his nerves.. To be honest, he was dealing with a plethora of swirling emotions that he just didn’t care to feel at the moment. Everything he felt- was usually private, he never had to explain them, he could focus on his friends and making them happy.. And to have them suddenly aired, without his consent, it was more than he could handle on his own..
Gabriel uncomplicated things.
Gabriel was someone he felt that he had a lot in common with, and despite some of the obvious differences, felt comfortable with. He was grateful that the other man had dropped everything that he was doing to come help him- though he did feel bad for interrupting him, the fact that he up and left the club for him.. That was ..more than he could have ever asked for.
As he sat on the curb, he looked over the breathing exercises, his long brimmed hat pressed down over his wavy bangs, obscuring the redness that had worked up to his face as the frustration of concentration had forced him to begin crying. All the stress, and worry of absolutely everything, had finally cracked him.. but he still attempted to steady himself even as Gabriel’s last text came in.
Reaching the heel of his hand up, he brushed it against his eyes and looked about for his taxi, and upon spotting it, rose to his feet, rolling his thumbs into the idle screen of his phone as he waited for him to step out - heart pounding in his chest for some reason far too foreign for him to comprehend..
Cynthia sat patiently at her desk, tapping her pen out of boredom. She had finished the paperwork a good half hour ago and Gabe still wasn’t here with her coffee. To be fair she had finished it quite quickly, but she was a receptionist, doing paperwork was second nature to her. Sighing she grabbed one of the completed pieces of work and erased it all, so at least when Gabe finally got here it looked like she wasn’t finished had been slaving away for hours and he would feel bad for taking so long. What was the point of delivering a coffee towards the end of the afternoon? She needed it at the start to help her think straight. All she had been thinking about while completing the mercilessly easy paperwork was Gabe, and how he would look when he walked in the door. He would be polished and perfect, his arms and chest bulging through a tight t-shirt and his hair flicked ever so carelessly to the side. She was imagining how his morning routine would go; steaming shower, black coffee and wet hands though his hair to get that I-don’t-care look that worked so well for him.
Smacking her pen down she huffed and scolded herself for letting her mind drift. What if Gabe had walked through the door at that moment? She would have been caught so off guard she probably would just gurgled some attempted words at him. Cynthia had bigger things than her little crush to worry about; like helping Meghan. She could be visiting her and her sister right now rather than sitting here and doing Gabe’s work for him because she didn’t have ability to say no in his presence. Shaking her head and making sure the now uncompleted piece of work was well in sight for Gabe when he walked through the door, she got up and moved over to her bag. Bending over, not worried about the pink lace panties that were probably peeking out from under her skirt, she pulled out a plain silver thermos, still warm to the touch from the contents inside. Straitening herself, she uncapped the bottle and took a swig of the still warm blood, letting it flow down her throat like silk.
Brushing a stray strand of her golden blonde hair back, Katherine finished wrapping the hair tie around the carefully pulled back hairstyle. After taking one last glance in the mirror to check over her appearance, she felt herself taking in one last deep breath to calm her nerves. It wasn’t that Gabriel made her nervous, that was actually quite the opposite. He made her comfortable- a rare occurrence in itself. Instead, it was the situation they found themselves in that made her nerves raise above their average levels. It seemed so easy to forget who and what they were when they could so easily share a conversation and the deeper details of their lives, as she’d admitted to her faults and mistakes that she’d rarely ever spoken of in the past. But that didn’t mean she forgot the obviously complications of creating an even closer relationship- to attempt a date. How many times would she make the same mistake in her lifetime? She had tried to be with a vampire before, to be close to one- and Katherine could only hope that history would not repeat itself yet again.
Her feet padded down the flights of stairs to the main level of the Smythe manor, knowing she would have to wait close to the door if she wanted to reach it first when he arrived. Considering the circumstances, her family would be bound to ask questions if any of them were to get to the door first, and while Katherine was accustomed to having all the answers, this was one thing she wasn’t quite ready to discuss with them. Honestly, she wouldn’t even know what to tell them until the night was over and she hopefully had a better understand of where Gabriel and she stood. It was obvious that they didn’t have his sister’s approval, as she had a difficult time accepting the concept of them having a friendship, let alone anything more. The last thing the original wanted was to get in the middle of family- as she knew how complicated it could be.
She had just finished slipping on her heels as the door chimed and she quickly made her way to the entrance pulling the door open, offering him a small smile. “Right on time,” she commented, moving to step outside with him.
