RVs AND MOTOR HOMES 1972/78
Pt. 1 - Exteriors
The motorhome consists of a chassis and drivetrain manufactured by Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet etc and an aluminum superstructure that merged the travel trailer and the truck that towed it. With fuel mileage average around 4mpg, the profitability of these vehicles was highly dependent on cheap gasoline.
While some makers followed the Airstream example (most notably the spectacular GMC motorhome), others, including Winnebago, the industry leader, stuck resolutely plain and defiantly un-aerodynamic designs. The harsh angularity and flat front end of the smaller models like the Brave has an odd, Tonka charm (which is greatly enhanced by the distinctive paint job) that is altogether lacking in the full-sized versions.
