Tonight I'm trying to find a place of inner peace by listening to my all time favorite Beach Boys adjacent release, Dennis Wilson's incredible solo album "Pacific Ocean Blue". Dennis' story is sad throughout and all you need is a quick google search, a couple of tall glasses of boxed wine, and you can find yourself in tears when you think about his Californian blend of raw musical talent, endless good intentions, and ultimate sad, raw, untimely death by drowning. He accidentally welcomed the Manson family into the world of starlets and rockstars and never lived it down, hell he almost got killed by them himself. He struggled with all sorts of demons like so many of the most talented artists tend to, but during his relatively short time on this mortal coil, he wrote one of the prettiest albums on our shelves. If you want to dip your toe, my two favorite beginner tracks are "River Song" as it is indicative of the whole Dennis Wilson vibe...kind of a more blue collar-y, down-home smoothed out Beach Boys, and "Moonshine", a classic heartbreak song that doesn't really follow any of the rules of a heartbreak song (and honestly includes some sad, distant whispers of the Beach Boys shtick in the vocal harmonies and background vocals). He had partied so hard by this point that the trademark saccharine sweetness of his voice was now a gravely baritone but it made his telling of a sad story all the more believable. This album is a cult classic and there is a real reason why. ON THIS DATE (42 YEARS AGO) August 22, 1977 - Dennis Wilson: Pacific Ocean Blue is released. Pacific Ocean Blue is Dennis Wilson's only solo album, released on August 22, 1977. It reached #96 on the Billboard 200 Top LP's chart during its 12 weeks stay. “This is my first solo album away from the Beach Boys. I’m sure you understand that I’m a bit nervous about this endeavor. I want to thank you for your support and I would be very interested in any comments or suggestions you might have after listening to this album." Thank you, Dennis Wilson It has allegedly been praised by his older brother Brian Wilson, but in a 2008 interview with Pitchfork Media, Brian denied knowing that Dennis had recorded an album at all. This became the first member of The Beach Boys to undertake a solo project. After several attempts, starting in 1970, to release his own project, some of which made it to the finished album, Wilson recorded the bulk of Pacific Ocean Blue in the months spanning the fall of 1976 to the following spring. Recalling the time Wilson spent working on the album, co-producer Gregg Jakobson said, "This was when he fully accepted himself as an artist. Brian had shown him chords on the piano, but as he'd become more proficient the music that came forth was not derivative of that. Having his own studio helped tremendously. With a little encouragement and the right tools, Dennis took off." It is also notable that Dennis' hard living had begun affecting his looks and more importantly his singing voice, which now delivered grainy and rough, yet still deeply soulful, vocals. Dennis Wilson "Pacific Ocean Blue" LP. The opening track "River Song" is one of those tunes that I will never get sick of. In my opinion it should have closed the album as it's the best song. By putting it first, he kinda blew his load early and the rest of the album suffers because of it.
