:) “Hold my hand so he gets jealous.”
Panic was the only explanation as your eyes flitted across the small crowd around you. It wasn’t the usual anxiety that seemed to creep up on you when standing in crowds, no. This was the very much dreaded anxiety you knew would eventually settle in your chest when your best friend had convinced you to come to the roller skating rink. The very same rink that you could very much see your ex flirting and hanging on a new girl in as you sat across the large room. You knew his eyes had seen you already, sitting alone and eating enough for two. You knew he was doing this just to make you jealous. And you hated that it was working.
Shoving a handful of fries into your mouth, you angrily chewed and glared at the table in front of you as you mulled your jealousy over in your head. You would’ve talked with your friend, but she was currently flirting with the DJ to get him to play something a little more risque than the early 2000s jams that were currently bumping through the speakers.
You reached for another handful of fries, shoveling them into your mouth like the previous batch when a chuckle came from your left. Your head turned, eyes wide as they scanned over the smiley boy standing next to your table. You quickly looked back at your mess of fries, wiping your mouth as his giggles still escaped him. “Are you mad at the fries? Did they do something to you?”
“Ah, no. Just…” Your teeth found your bottom lip as you watched him easily slide into the seat across from you, an ever present boxy smile that made your train of thought derail the slightest bit, and you couldn’t stop your eyes from wandering over to your ex, who hadn’t seemed to see you yet. “My ex is here with…a girl and I don’t know why I’m even upset, or telling a stranger my problems.” Your laugh was nervous but you watched him nod his head anyway as you took a deep sip of your lemonade. It fell silent, his eyes scanning the rink before they fell back on you.
“My name’s Taehyung. Now I’m not a stranger.” He shrugged a bit and you only nodded, finding yourself smiling a little bit. Taehyung wasn’t wrong, now he wasn’t that much of a stranger. He casually reached for a fry, popping the food into his mouth before motioning toward you. “And you are?”
“Y/N. Now we really aren’t strangers.” You nodded once and Taehyung mimicked the motion, an oddly comfortable silence falling over the two of you. Your eyes scanned the rink once again, your friend still talking with the DJ between songs, and your ex still with the girl. You could tell he was looking now, though, his brows furrowing the slightest bit in confusion as he eyed Taehyung up and down. With a sigh, you turned back to your pile of food, frowning at it before shaking your head. “Listen, I’m sorry for dumping my problems on you but-”
“Hold my hand so he gets jealous.” Taehyung’s suggestion cut off your words, making them die in your throat as his face was now serious, a 180 from moments before. You sputtered slightly, fingers curling in on themself as you did a quick run through before he was smiling again, a wink following the short laugh he let slip past his lips. “I know you want to get back at him. It’ll be fun, too.”
“I-I guess.” You complied and soon, you found yourself following the flow of other skaters on the rink, hand in Taehyung’s the entire time you skated together. It felt too soon that the rink was closing and you were returning your skates with Taehyung. As you left the rink, still hand in hand, you caught a glimpse of your ex and couldn’t hold back the smile at the scowl on his face. “Thank you for helping me you. I know you didn’t have to but it was really nice.”
“It really wasn’t a problem. My friends were boring anyways.” Taehyung said and you couldn’t hold back the smile as you both stopped in the parking lot. His hand squeezed yours slightly as you both pulled away the slightest bit, a small frown making it’s way onto his face. “I think it’d be more fun to go on an actual date, though. Where we don’t have to worry about exes and all that junk.”
You could feel your eyes widen but the smile that found itself onto your face mirrored the one on Taehyung’s. And you couldn’t help but agree, trading numbers and feeling your heart skip a beat at the thought of seeing him again, the warmth from his hand something you never wanted to forget as you made your way home.
