How to Pack for Spirit Airlines for a Week-Long Trip and Pay NO Fees

Even though it may seem like one of Hercules’ 12 challenges to fit all that you need for a week-long trip into a 16 x 14 x 12 inch space, it IS doable. And no, you don’t have to ditch that extra pair of shoes you want to wear or any of your basic toiletries.

First, a little background (if you’re familiar with Spirit Airlines’ pricing system, skip this part). Spirit is the “ala carte” of airlines. When you pay for a ticket you get...a ticket. No packet of peanuts; no cup of water. No in-flight magazine. NO bag in the overhead bin (unless you’re willing to pay a fee). The one thing you DO get is the small space under the seat in front of you--a 16″ x 14″ x 12″ slot that would be a tight squeeze for an Etruscan shrew.

How can you fit all your necessities into that space? With a little planning. Here’s what to do:

1. Dress in Layers

The ultimate cheat! I layered spandex shorts, black leggings, and gray linen pants on the bottom and a camisole, dress black sleeveless, gray long-sleeved, and a black hoodie on the top. I also wore jewelry, a decorative scarf, socks, and sneakers. I traveled from Minneapolis to Orlando and, yes, I was hot as the Dickens when I arrived, but I managed.

This is everything I wore (below).

2. Think Small

I packed a tiny deodorant, toothbrush, etc. (find mini toiletries at your local Target or on Amazon) I even brought my laptop (this was a necessity for me because I’m a freelance writer and can’t really take a week off. The laptop is a 10 inch Asus Transformer tablet-with-keyboard). I packed a few shirts that packed down small (think tank tops and thin t-shirts).

3. Think Multi-Purpose/Multi-Use

The dress that I packed also doubles as a skirt (Fem folk: Google “skirt-dress combo” and take a look at all the great items that come up!). I also packed items that I could mix and match (my base colors were gray and black, so I matched accordingly).

Yes, I fit everything in the following pictures in my pack. A couple skirts, a few shirts, shorts, 2 workout tops, bikini, undergarments, laptop, chargers, flip-flops, sandals, jewelry, toiletries. Bam! Not pictured: phone and water bottle that I threw in later.

4. Use Your Resources

If you’re staying in a hotel, use the freebie shampoo/conditioner (I know, I know...it’s just for a little while), the hair dryer, the provided lotion, the towels. If there is a washer/dryer nearby, hit it up if necessary.

5. Find the Right Pack

I used an REI North Dome pack and it worked great. I was able to stow a notebook, my phone, and the tiny purse/wallet I used during the trip in the front and my jewelry and toiletries in the top pouch.

Plenty big. 16″ long, less than 12″ high, less than 14″ wide.

You’re not traveling in luxury, but hey, you’re on vacation! Bring a set of earplugs or headphones, nestle into your hoodie, and relax. Oh...and don’t forget to bring a water bottle and a snack. Lean back (as much as you can!) and think about all the money you saved that you can now spend on zip-lining, theme parks, nice dinners, rafting, or whatever you’re about to do on vacay. Enjoy!
