The Yule goat(Swedish: Julbocken) appears in Scandinavian and Germanic Paganism. Its origin is unclear but a popular theory suggests that it is connected to the worship of Thor. Thor rode a chariot carried by two goats Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr. The last sheaf of corn harvested was believed to have magic and was saved for Yule celebrations. During the 19th century the Yule goats role shifted to that of a gift bringer.
One well known Yule Goat is the Gävle Julbock. A giant straw goat, which stands proudly in the central square of Gävle each year, has gained international recognition. Built annually since 1966.
Julebukking is the tradition of Scandinavian origin where people wear masks go door to door either singing songs or the neighbors attempt to identify them.
