Using the Obins Mountain as a landmark, you try to estimate how far apart the [Tourmaline Throne] is from [Yexxies Harbor]

Your best guess is that their destination is about [16] to [20] days travel on foot.

Floren immediately flies into a panic as soon as Seran says this rather cryptic statement.

Cal mentioned how rare guns are, so it stands to reason they could be sold at a high price. It seems that Floren plans to trade a rather expensive rifle for new eyes? You wonder if they are referring to Serans strange white eyes. That could explain why they are looking for a skilled doctor.

Aw, shucks. I'm just your algebro. (Please submit each question separately, so I can more easily sort and link to them later. I'll do #16 in this post, and then I'll answer 17 in a few minutes in another post.)

Like most shaded region questions, this one is easier tackled by solving for everything BUT the shaded region.

The rectangle is our "whole" here. It's 1 high and 2 wide, so it's area is 1 × 2 = 2.

Each unshaded round thing (as I hope you see in the figure I drew) is 1/4 of a circle with radius 1. A circle with radius 1 has an area of π, so each round unshaded region has an area of π/4. There are 2 of them, so the total unshaded part of the rectangle is 2(π/4) = π/2.

So to find the area of the shaded region:

area of shaded region = area of whole – area of unshaded regionarea of shaded region = 2 - π/2
