The Art and Science of Page Turns, or Why the Hard Copy of Check, Please! is Great

Last week I got my copies of Check, Please! Year One and Year Two. I began happily re-reading, and I noticed something: the page turns in Year One are fucking amazing. Let me explain.

Now, Year One isn’t really a picture book--it’s a comic, and it’s in print, so I guess I’d fudge terms and call it a graphic novel. But the page turn Thing still applies. I digress.

Anyway, I was utterly fucking delighted to find that Year One’s page turns are the stuff of legend. One of my favorite examples starts on page 94, which is the second panel of “The Closet Story - I.” Ransom and Holster are trying to tease out Bitty’s preferences in girls. In the page 96-97 spread Bitty gets more and more uncomfortable. Ransom cheerfully asks, “What’s your type?”

I turn the page.

Page 98, the kicker: “Men.”

It’s perfect and it delights me utterly.
