Pai Men Miyake - Ramen, Pork Buns, Fantastic Beers
Having lived in Portland's West End for six months now, I couldn't be more happy about our neighborhood restaurant right down the street Pai Men Miyake, located in Longfellow Square at the intersection of Congress Street and State Street, nestled between LFK and French restaurant Petite Jacqueline.
Sister restaurant to Portland's finest sushi restaurant Miyake (located on Fore Street), Pai Men Miyake is a casual spot great for hot ramen on a cold winter night or some late night small plates. During the winter months, Pai Men's front windows are always foggy, playfully concealing the inner mecca of eastern cuisine from the public. If you decide to stop by Pai Men on one of these nights, you're immediately hit by a tsunami of delicious aromas upon entry, and you feel right at home. The staff is friendly, and every time my girlfriend and I decide to swing by we're welcomed like family. The ever-rotating draft selection is hand-picked by one of Portland's most loveable bartenders, a relaxed former Oxbow employee sporting a large blonde beard. The beers offered always include microbrew selections from around Maine and some obscure gems from Europe.
Best items on the menu:
Fried brussel sprouts (cilantro, mint)
Pork Buns (braised pork belly, spicy mayo, relish)
Pai Tan Ramen (The heartiest of the noodle bowls, the pai tan is made with a pork and chicken broth. I suggest adding spicy garlic paste for extra heat.)
Ceviche Maki (one of the most beautiful plates offered)
Pai Men Miyake's ridiculous pork buns
Pai Tan Ramen with nori, pork belly, scallion, and soy-marinated egg
With its year-round availability of fresh seafood and fish, Portland now boasts many great Asian restaurants. If you're unsure which local eatery to check out first, Pai Men Miyake is a great place to start and will not disappoint!
