trouble with the traveler

There is something

incredibly unsettling about

the way I can see myself with you,

that I can see more than

just a couple dates

or nights spent exploring and

holding hands in the cold

The real problem here

is that I can see this

us

in two weeks

or three months

or four years

or fifty more trips around the sun

I like to think that these

thoughts are predictions

of my future and that one day

someone would actually marry me

(and by someone I mean

the only someone I wouldn’t

think I’d be settling with)

I find myself enjoying

these thoughts a little

too much for comfort

and it seems that they have

begun to flutter into my mind

day or night

I started searching my dreams again

in hopes for some insight

but each one keeps running back

to the same silver-haired boy

with so much ambition

that it stretches across oceans

to countries he one day

hopes to live in

These are the same places

that people like me

only get to visit

in the spare time we might get

on planes we may

get the chance to catch

This is the only time

I’ll ever willingly refer to myself

as a normal person

who will probably have

an eight-to-five job

five or six days a week

(It doesn’t even matter to

my brain that my career will be

have just a significant of an impact here)

I’ll most likely land

in a coastal state

some breezy, open place that

people like him

just don’t settle for

Instead, they decide

to teach English to children

who hope to come to the States

or write articles for

National Geographic while

exploring deserted war zones

and wastelands

Although I’ve started to actually

think that I may become

a sort of wasteland

if the settling I have to do

is the kind that makes me step away

for the sake of our sanity

I suppose that the issue with this

is that I would not be an adventure

worth embarking on again

but rather a story to tell

to the kids in far away countries

and think back on fondly

(but probably with little enough motivation

to only catch up periodically)

At that point,

my only hope would be that

out of every mountain he climbs

every city he sees,

every journey he embarks on,

i am still seen

as some type of adventure

(because i think

that kind of love

is one for the books)

But mainly

spring cleaning my soul

Thanks for staying

I do appreciate your

kindness and warmth

I would invite you in but

it's a little cold in here

and I've never been quite sure

how to warm it up

It seems you have done

quite the number on me

and so I suppose a thank you

is in order

Within this exchange, I have mostly

uncluttered my fireplace

and thrown a few logs on

top of the ancient ashes from

at least last year or a while before

I do wish I'd have had some warning

Just a little time to

adjust the thermostat or

sweep the rug that would welcome you

You see, there are an awful lot

of empty coffee cups and

plants that have withered away

that I'm sure you don't want to see

Dust has covered mostly everything

and my tables and chairs are

no exception

Same goes for the picture frames

and the top of the fridge that

have all been neglected

My bedsheets were once rose colored,

much like my view of the world,

but now

my pillows are not fluffed and it looks

as if this place could use

a good vacuuming

The candles haven't been

lit in ages, and I can’t tell you

where a lighter is even if the occasion

presented itself

You see, it is just not fit for company and

for that I truly apologize

I just haven't had the energy or the time

to make it open to the public

or whatever category you fall in

You see,

I am not opposed to making it

beautiful again,

there is just little motivation

and truly it is a tremendous task

for just one person

That being said,

I do believe that

you have already helped

more than you'll ever know

Perhaps we could light these

old candles

make a fresh pot of coffee

sit on freshly washed silk sheets

together.. soon?

I think there may be a spare key

hiding under my porched peace lily

and I suppose

that you could use it when you like

On second thought, maybe you

could just stop in

No notice necessary but

I'll say this

I hope you are okay with clearing the

cobwebs that keep crowding the

ceilings of my mind

Bring your best gloves and

I guarantee the door won’t

be too hard to open
