Maybe? Probably tbh.
On one hand, Nefarian was really well liked in SoW even by people that aren’t nasty boi fans, with multiple people stating he was the highlight of the book. Personally, I was also being very vocal about him being the main reason I bought the book, tho I’m not sure how many people felt the same. Regardless, seeing how well liked Nef was in general I had expected him to 100% be in DoA. Especially since on so many occasions in SoW it had been heavily hinted at that Nef wasn’t being entirely sincere and was having ulterior motives. China even wanted to have him killed bc she couldn’t have Nefarian Fucking Serpine walking the streets of Roarhaven unsupervised bc he’s just so unpredictable, always scheming and that much of a threat. The whole Lorien ordeal also nicely set up a plotline where Nef finds out China wanted him killed and then goes after her for revenge. And with him losing his red hand I thought Landy was (very clumsily and very shittily) nerfing Nef so he could become part of the main team. There was so much set up and Nef doesn’t even get mentioned, this is complete bs!
Then again, I suppose Nef made the same mistake as the all the other fan-favourites (like Billy Ray, Kenspeckle, Solomon, Ghastly, China, Tanith) and threatened to outshine Landy’s precious self-insert main-characters. We can’t have that, now, do we? Instead we gotta focus on Val and Skul and how fucking special they are. So special indeed that each of them gotta have like thirty million alter egos.
I can be the only one that has noticed that every single fan favourite that isn’t Val or Skul has either been killed off or gets barely any screen-time anymore?
TLDR: Yeah, Nef most likely wasn’t featured in DoA bc he was too well liked and Landy didn’t want him to outshine Val and Skul, who are both getting more unlikable with each book.
