Hey guys! I have great news to share!
This weekend I had the pleasure of doing a Workshop with the incredible Ruan Jia! (Concept Artist for Halo, Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft, Diablo 3)
I learned so much about painting, it’s been a wonderful experience! He taught us how to block shapes with greyscale and how to make good compositions and manage light and shadow.
In this post you can see the first picture is a landscape I did. So many errors! Thankfully Jia told us he would do some paint-overs on our pictures so we could learn what we did wrong.
First thing I did wrong, the landscape always has to be in a 16:9 format so it looks better, bigger and fascinating. After that, all the lines start bigger and then grow smaller and converge at the center of the picture. The small human figure makes you understand how big the rocks are. Humans in landscapes are very useful to show the size of the environment objects.
In a good landscape there must always be an empty space where the eye can relax. That’s why the clouds are located on the side and leave the other empty where you can clearly see the sky.
Also, if you have 2 objects near each other it’s better if one is bigger and the other is smaller so you can better perceive the distance.
In the coming days I’ll finish the landscape following his advices. I’m really happy I can now understand composition better because sometimes things seem obvious but you only understand them after you really see them.
