For the Weirdly Specific Artist Ask Game, please!
2. Is it easier to draw someone facing left or right (or forward even)
10. Favorite piece of clothing to draw
19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)
20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy
Thanks for the ask, @serialsforbellara! ❤
"Weirdly Specific Artist Ask Game" here.
#2: Is it easier to draw someone facing left or right (or forward even)
Facing to the viewer's left. I suspect it's because I'm right-handed; it just seems to flow more naturally if characters are facing slightly to my left. I have to actively think about making people face right.
Forward isn't as much of a challenge; I just prefer a 3/4 view to face-on (less fussing with symmetry that way).
#10. Favorite piece of clothing to draw
Scarves and sashes. Sure, knots are annoying, but I have a system down now for drawing them in a way that looks acceptable (like, they pass the verisimilitude test).
#19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)
Nature's a pretty good pick, actually. Just about anything organic. Sure, straight lines are manageable with a ruler, but then you run into more issues with perspective (and all the tiny details on tech). Organic things get to be pretty free-form. I've had some fun drawing trees in the past.
#20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy
Flowers, I think? I know I've seen some gripes about them before, but they're just shapes. I used to do folding paper fans and flower ones were very popular, so I've learned how to best break down flowers into basic shapes for drawing. Here, have examples (because why not include art on these art asks?):
(No, cherry blossoms weren't a perennial favorite, why do you ask? 😉)
A Reverie, in the Artist’s House (1878). John Atkinson Grimshaw (English, 1836-1893). Oil on canvas.
Painted in a colour-scheme of jade, rose, gold and kingfisher-blue emphasised by the dark flooring and wall panelling, which echoes the hues of the kimono draped casually over the sofa and embroidered with scenes of Japanese women. Grimshaw probably painted his wife Frances Theodosia Grimshaw (known as Fanny) wearing a beautiful silk gown with a pleated front.

If anyone can help me find the origins of these I'd be very grateful. The bottom two look more modern so perhaps they are by artists who are alive. It would be great if we could discover them.
