despite its common name, the painted greenling (Oxylebius pictus) often displays a variety of browns and brilliant reds. it is the only member of the oxylebius genus.

O. pictus typically inhabit intertidal zones, but have been found at depths of ~210 m (700 ft). they have been known to take shelter in the stinging tentacles of anemones, which are harmful to most animals, but have no effect on the greenlings. their range extends from alaska to baja, california, where they reside in coastal ecosystems and eat small crustaceans and mollusks.
