Top 5 Art tools in the studio
Follow me t] @4Bara What tools couldn't I do without? Inspired by Cass Art's blog last week, I came up with the top 5 studio tools I just couldn't do without. They might surprise you! And on the whole, they're not paint. 1. Derwent Graphitone pencils A rather new addition to my tools but now I don't know how I'd do without them! The absolutely most important pencil in my travel kit, so that I can do super dark lines and grey watercolour washes. 2. Fluorescent daylight strips I built these myself so that they have 10m cords - to reach and prop up anywhere in the studio! Since my studio is now less than 3m across, you know these were actually made for the previous space. These were easy to put together with bulbs and strips from a lighting company online, then some cable and plugs from the local DIY shop. With English weather and the fact that I'm more of a late-day painter, these are essential to keep an illusion of daylight. 3. My brushes from A.S. Handover When my brushes started getting larger, it was really breaking the bank at the art store. I soon made two discoveries. First, it was actually varnishing brushes that I prefered to paint with. And second, that I could buy them direct from the source and pay a fraction of the price. A.S. Handover specialises in brushes for the interiors and building industry. So my exact same brushes at art stores have about a 3-4x markup! 4. Meter rule stick I love my measuring stick! It's old. It's wood. It's covered in paint. It has razor blade nicks along the side. I used to have a metal one too (which has gone astray) but it's just not the same as this one. Plus this one spins around quite well in my hand as I'm pondering things. 5. Golden Zinc White Well, you must have known this one was coming? Yes, the only paint I couldn't do without and would be hard-pressed to replace with another brand. I don't know why, but I've tried other brands and the transparency and texture is too different. While I buy 60ml tubes of most paints, this I buy in 960ml when I can. I reckon at least 50% of every painting is made up of zinc white.
