Finished! First full oil painting. Mostly for exploration sake, to get a feel for the paint and because well, pigeons. I'll get brave and varnish her at somepoint.

Yup, oils are harder to photograph for sure... any tips or tricks? 😂 Of course one of the first things I try to paint is a pigeon. Pigeons are lovely. And incredibly pretty birds, when you look beyond their reputation. First layer done, currently drying.
First attempt at freeform oils - aka, not a tutorial... of course, it's going to be a pigeon. It's turning out very naïve, but I can see the potential in the long run!
Look at this delicious mess! I'm learning oils. This is a preview of my first; "not following a tutorial, off into the wilderness on my own" oil painting, and this is the stage where I usually decide if I am enjoying the medium and want to keep going. In the case of oils, I am head over heels in love. I can't stop :) So I will start sharing my oily adventures here from the beginning and totally expect a painting of Maisie happening soon...!
Have you tried a new medium recently? A new technique or style, or revisited something you did a while ago? 6 weeks ago, this little package of basic oils, some different cleaners and thinners, and three new brushes arrived. I slapped some paint onto a cheap, small canvas I had lying around from my old acrylic attempts... and I totally fell in love. Kicking myself for not attempting oils earlier and fighting with acrylics, assuming it was me and not them. Turns out, I love the slowness and wet nature of oils compared to instant dry acrylics!
Red ball! Ehehehe this is so bad it is laughable, but am still sharing it as part of a journey into a new medium because I learned so much from this awful red ball. One of my biggest takeaways is just how much vibrancy and *depth* there is in oil painting - this has three layers and each layer just made it glow more and more. ...which you can't tell because I am also a terrible photographer. Womp womp. Oh look, another really badly painted ball! This one is an underpainting for my first attempt at adding colour to my oil painting. Am finding oils quite hard but also really enjoyable and I can see the potential... now if only I could actually make them do what I want them to! A tutorial by @josephpatricdaniels

So it turns out that I love oils and will be taking my learnings as far as I can! I think it would be fun to share my journey from stage 1, to see how far I can go! This was my first attempt, keeping to greyscale so as to not be distracted by colour. It was very hard and very scruffy, but it cemented that yes, I really enjoy this medium!
